American philanthropist and civil rights activist Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune founded the Daytona Literary and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls with just $1.50 on 3 October 1904. The first pupils were five young girls, aged six to 12, and Dr. Bethune’s son, Albert. In 1923 the school merged with Cookman Institute of Jacksonville, Florida and from 1925 was known as the Daytona-Cookman Collegiate Institute. It gained junior college status in April 1931 and within a decade achieved full college status.
