Update:

The Kansas Jayhawks, who enter the 2026 March Madness fray on Friday, are led by a coach recognized as the best-paid in college basketball.

How much does the Jayhawks’ coach earn?

Now in his 22nd season at the helm of the four-time national champions, Bill Self signed an amended lifetime contract as Kansas head coach in 2023. It’s a deal that will net him around $53 million over the five-year period through 2028, per calculations by KUSports.com’s Henry Greenstein.

According to Self’s contract, which is available to view online, the Oklahoman can also earn a series of performance-related bonuses. They include the following March Madness payments:

  • Tournament qualification: $50,000
  • Sweet 16 qualification: $100,000
  • Final Four qualification: $150,000
  • National championship win: $200,000

“No place like Kansas”

Appointed as the Jayhawks’ head coach back in April 2003, Self has coached Kansas to two NCAA Division I titles, triumphing at the March Madness Final Four in 2008 and 2022. Under the 63-year-old, Kansas also finished as runner-up in 2012, losing out to the Kentucky Wildcats in the championship game.

A coach with over 800 career wins, Self was handed an initial lifetime contract as Kansas head coach in 2021, before signing a revised agreement two years later. “There’s no place like Kansas,” he told a press release issued by Kansas University. The institution’s director of athletics, Travis Goff, added that Self is “undoubtedly the most consistent coach in college basketball”.

According to USA Today’s most recent ranking of college basketball’s top-earning coaches, Self is followed by the Arkansas Razorbacks’ John Calipari ($8m a year), and the UConn Huskies’ Dan Hurley ($7.75m).

A maiden Cal Baptist matchup for Kansas

Seeded at No. 4 in the East region, the Kansas Jayhawks kick off their 2026 March Madness bid with a round-of-64 clash against the California Baptist Lancers, seeded at No. 13. This will be the first ever meeting between the 23-10 Jayhawks and the 25-8 Lancers, a team making its NCAA tournament debut.

We’re studying Cal Bap, because I don’t know as much [about them],” Self told reporters earlier this week.

The two-time College Coach of the Year added that he doesn’t expect the Lancers’ lack of March Madness experience to have a major impact on the first-round clash.

It’s the first time some of our guys have made it, too," Self noted. “Could it be a factor in some ways? Yeah, I guess it could. But I coached Tulsa [in 1998] when it was the first time any of those guys played in the tournament, and they actually did fairly well. So I don’t know that that’s a huge factor.”

While California Baptist heads to San Diego fresh from winning the Western Athletic Conference tournament - beating Utah Valley 63-61 in last Saturday’s final - Kansas must respond to a Big 12 semifinal defeat. Seven days ago, the Jayhawks missed out on a place in the WAC title decider when they were beaten 69-47 by the Houston Cougars.
