The Army-Navy game is one of the most enduring and traditional fixtures on the college football calendar. This game has been played 125 times and is frequently attended by sitting US Presidents, congress members, and the top brass of both services. Since 1945, the game has been nationally televised every year, and in 2022 the game drew 6.9 million viewers, making it one of the 15 most-watched college football games of the year.

The Army-Navy football series started way back in 1890, and nine years later, it became an annual event. Although the Army has been doing better in recent years, winning four of the last five games, the Navy is still leading in the series with 62 wins compared to the Army’s 55. Seven games ended in a tie.

Before the Army’s recent success, the Navy had won 17 out of 19 games, including a 14-game winning streak from 2002 to 2015.

The rivalry between Annapolis and West Point is intense but friendly. The phrases “Beat Navy!” and “Beat Army!” are deeply ingrained in both institutions and have become symbols of competitiveness. These phrases are often used at the end of informal letters by academy graduates, not just in the Army-Navy game but also in the country’s service.

The game closes the NCAA football season and is an emotional class for both sides, especially for seniors, called “first classmen” by both academies.
