Why is Matthew McConaughey a Texas Longhorns fan? The reason why the actor is on the Longhorns' sideline

The College Football Playoff action continues this week with the Bowl games from across the country. On Friday evening the Texas Longhorns will take on Ohio State on the Cotton Bowl Classic and there may be a famous face in attendance.
Actor Matthew McConaughey is perhaps the best-known supporter of the Longhorns and often comes to team games. Born in Uvalde, Texas, McConaughey has maintained a strong connection to his home state throughout his stellar acting acting career.
McConaughey attended the University of Texas at Austin from 1989 to 1993, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Radio, Television, and Film. During his college years, McConaughey joined the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and became an avid supporter of the Longhorns. His love for the team remains strong.

McConaughey’s relationship with the Longhorns extends beyond that of a typical fan. He is often seen on the sidelines during games, cheering enthusiastically and engaging with the team. He has given motivational speeches to the players and even participated in team activities. His presence and support have made him a beloved figure among Longhorns fans and players alike, but he plays no formal ownership role with the team.
McConaughey is, however, a minority owner of MLS team Austin FC. The Western Conference team began play in the 2021 season after a successful expansion bid from Anthony Precourt, an investor who previously owned the Columbus Crew. The ownership group, Two Oak Ventures, includes McConaughey, local entrepreneur Eduardo Margain and former Dell executive Marius Haas.
“You know, for years, the only game in town in Austin, Texas, was University of Texas, where I graduated. That was the only thing in town,” McConaughey explained. “Soccer brings people together from all over the world better than any other game. Austin is a little microcosm of the world, so on any given night, you can go and have our 21,000 fans at Q2, and all those sellouts.”
