Kyle McCord had impressive stats in 2023, completing 229 out of 348 passes (65.8%) for 3,170 yards, 24 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. However, he had two games where he threw multiple interceptions: in the 24-10 win against Wisconsin and the 30-24 loss to Michigan.

Following the loss to the Wolverines and Ohio State’s 7th-place ranking in the College Football Playoff, Kyle McCord announced that he had entered the transfer portal.

Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord’s decision to transfer to another school has surprised many. The news broke just a day after Ohio State learned it would play against Missouri in the Cotton Bowl. McCord’s transfer has raised questions about his future with the team and the starting quarterback position for the 2024 season.

Coach Ryan Day’s comments on the situation have been somewhat ambiguous. When asked about the team’s starting quarterback job next season, he did not confirm that McCord would be the starter.

McCord was a highly rated four-star recruit in the class of 2021, ranked as the No. 35 prospect overall and the No. 4 pro-style quarterback in his class. He played in four games this season, completing 87 of 135 passes for 1,175 yards, with nine touchdowns and five interceptions. Despite his impressive performance, his transfer means that either Devin Brown or Lincoln Kleinholz will start for Ohio State against Missouri in the Cotton Bowl.

Brown has served as Ohio State’s backup this season and appeared in five games, completing 33 of 48 passes for 406 yards, with three touchdowns and one interception. Kleinholz has made two appearances, completing 2 of 3 passes for 15 yards. It remains to be seen who will be named the starting quarterback for the 2024 season, but Ohio State fans will be watching closely to see how the situation develops.
