Although Super Bowl LVII feels like it just ended, teams are now readying themselves for the 2023 NFL Draft which gets going today. The planning and preparation for this event started early but now it’s time to bring it all together.
2023 NFL Draft: what can we expect?
The official order for the 2023 NFL Draft was determined a while back and as a result, following their Super Bowl victory, the Kansas City Chiefs will have the 31st pick, while the Eagles, whom they defeated, will have the 30th pick.
More from the NFL:
It may come as a surprise that there are only 31 spots listed this year, despite 32 teams in the league. This is due to the Miami Dolphins forfeiting their pick after violating league rules by contacting Sean Payton and Tom Brady illegally.
There are also a few other factors to consider, such as the Saints, who are now back in the first round after the Broncos traded away another first-round pick - they previously traded a top-five pick in the Russell Wilson deal - to secure the services of the Payton mentioned above as their head coach. Interestingly, the Eagles have the 10th pick from the Saints following their exchange with them during last year’s Draft.
The Carolina Panthers (7-10 last season) traded up and paid a high price to take the top pick in the draft (from the Chicago Bears). The Bears received the franchise’s No. 9 and No. 61 picks, a 2024 first-round pick, a 2025 second-round pick, and wide receiver D.J. Moore. Following them are the Houston Texans in second place and the Arizona Cardinals in third.
