The 2023 NFL Scouting Combine: The lay of the land

The 2023 NFL Draft is right around the corner, but before we get there, we’ve got that special proving ground for players that we know as the NFL Scouting Combine. During the four-day event the league’s teams will get first-hand look at the future prospects as they are put through a number of tests and drills in order to evaluate their abilities. Of course, it won’t just be coaches, assistants, GMs and scouts, as fans will be on hand as well to see the more than 300 prospects fighting for a spot on one of the NFL’s teams ahead of the upcoming season.

So far, we’ve already seen some promising players as well as a bit of drama. Where the former is concerned, we saw Calijah Kancey out Pittsburgh showing off his speed in a huge way on Day 1, posting a time of 4.67 seconds in the 40-yard dash. To be clear, that’s the fastest time registered by a defensive tackle at the NFL Combine since 2003. The No. 40 prospect overall is similar in stature to another Pittsburgh product and current NFL star, Aaron Donald, which as you can imagine already has scouts salivating. As for the latter, Day 1 was rocked somewhat by the news of Jalen Carter’s arrest warrant in connection with a fatal car crash back in January. Though Carter was later able to return, it’s unclear as to whether the situation will affect the Draft stock of a player who is widely regarded as No. 1 overall.
