49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo set to return to throwing the ball in the near future

Though he could yet be on the move, it’s good news for both the player and the franchise as they prepare for the new season.

Though it might be possible that they’re still - even now - licking wounds after their failure to reach the 2022 Super Bowl, it may well be that the 49ers have themselves a silver lining.

49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo on track for return to play

When the San Francisco 49ers saw their post season come to an end at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams earlier this year, it was common knowledge by then that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would have to undergo surgery during the off-season to correct a “capsule issue” in the back of his shoulder. According to reports, with the surgery now behind him Garoppolo is in fact well on the road to recovery with his rehabilitation apparently going as it was intended. Indeed, Garoppolo is even expected to start throwing the ball again in the coming weeks. Assuming that’s the case, ‘Jimmy G’ could well be back in time for training camp.

What’s been going on with Jimmy Garoppolo?

After his surgery back in March, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said that he expected Garoppolo to be back on the field and throwing by early July. While the timeline on that is of course tight, it’s still achievable if reports of the quarterback’s progress are to be believed. After all his original time frame for full recovery was set at 16 weeks. To date Garoppolo has not been able to participate in any of the team’s OTAs and was also granted leave for the mandatory 49ers minicamp in order to continue with his rehab process.

What now for Jimmy G?

As expected, the major question surrounding the 49ers QB is how he will perform after he makes his return to the field. At 30 years old one can imagine that such an injury and subsequent operation will have an effect on trade talks. That has in fact been one of the major stories of the NFL’s offseason so far. Add to that the fact that QB Trey Lance - now is in his second season - is expected to be the starter in San Francisco when the new season kicks off. What does that mean? It could well be that the 49ers focus in the coming weeks will be on finding their QB a new team to play for.

Incidentally, Shanahan said just last month that the expectation is that Garoppolo will be traded, however, that is not set in stone. The reality is that the majority of teams in the NFL have already addressed their play making needs. That’s even before considering the doubts that will inevitably surround a veteran player coming offer a tricky injury and corrective surgery. All we can do is watch this space.
