49ers - Vikings injury report for NFL week 2: McCaffrey, Hufanga and Addison
49ers wide receiver Christian McCaffrey is set for a spell on the sidelines after being placed on the IR list.
The San Francisco 49ers and the Minnesota Vikings both got the 2024 NFL season off to hugely positive starts comfortable Week 1 victories over the New York Jets (32-19) and the New York Giants (28-6) respectively. The two teams meet at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis in Week 2 and will be keen to build more momentum in NFC.
Why isn’t Christian McCaffrey playing against the Vikings?
The main injury news for the 49ers again concerns Christian McCaffrey, who missed the opening win against the Jets because of calf and Achilles issues. Not only has the wide receiver been ruled out of playing against the Vikings, but he has now been placed on the IR list, which he will miss at least four games.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media on Friday: “Yesterday was his worst day. It’s on and off. Yesterday having the most pain is something we are going to be discussing in the next 24 hours.” Jordan Mason, who rushed for 147 yards and scored a touchdown in Week 1, will again start in McCaffrey’s place.
Safety Talanoa Hufanga is listed as doubtful because of a knee issue, while linebacker Dee Winters is questionable due to an ankle problem.
Who is injured for the Vikings?
As the Vikings, they are also one wide receiver down, with Jordan Addison out after injuring his ankle against the Giants. Much to the relief of the 49ers, against whom the 22-year-old recorded seven catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns in Week 7 last year.
Safety Harrison Smith has had limited participation in practice this week because of a hip issue and is rated as questionable, with guard Ed Ingram (triceps) and offensive tackle Brian O’Neill (elbow) in the same boat.
