49ers 48 vs. 27 Colts summary, stats, score and highlights | NFL Week 16

The Colts kept on fighting but the Niners put the nail in the coffin as Dee Winters picked off Rivers and took it to the house to close the door on the Colts. Rivers had a fantastic night, going 23/35 for 277 yards, 2 TDs and this INT. With the loss, the Colts playoff chances are even slimme, but the Niners know they control their own destiny for the one seed in the NFC.

Purdy set a new career high with his fifth TD of the night, and his second to McCaffrey. McCaffrey ended the night with 117 yards on 21 carries and 29 yards and 2 TDs receiving. Purdy ended the night with 295 yards and 5 TDs on 25/34 passing. 

The Colts would respond, cutting the lead to 7 with almost the entire fourth quarter remaining but their defense couldn't get a stop all night. 

The Niners would add to their lead with this TD pass from Purdy to Jauan Jennings on the right side of the end zone. IT looked like it was over, but the Colts had other ideas. 

The Brock Purdy show didn't slow down in the slightest. He made sure the Colts were going to have to keep pace, throwing three first half TDs, the last of which to George Kittle who had 115 yards and a TD on 7 catches before getting injured in the 2nd half. 

Rivers came to play with the Colts season basically on the line. He connected with Alec Peters for a second time in the first half, and it was 14-14 just a few second into the 2nd quarter. 

The Niners would take the lead with Purdy's pass to Christian McCaffrey who had a monster game on Monday night from Indy. 

The Colts special teams gave up a fumble on the following kickoff after the Niners TD and that opened the door for SF to take the lead. 

Brock Purdy and the 49ers would punch back with a quick strike drive as he hit Demarcus Robinson to start a streak of four straight scoring drives in the first half. 

The San Francisco 49ers came into Monday night with a playoff spot clinched and with a chance to earn the one seed in the NFC. They ended the night with the possibility of a one seed still very much alive. 

The Colts and 44 year old Phillip Rivers came out swinging, driving right down the field and Rivers hit Alec Pierce to start off a night full of TDs from Indy.

WE ARE BACK IN INDY FOR THE SECOND HALF OF ACTION!!!

Brock Purdy has three first half TDs, and his third went to George Kittle as he goes to half with 165 yards and three TDs on 13/17 passing. Kittle leads the Niners in receiving with 78 yards on 5 catches as SF go into the half up 24-17. 

Rivers and the Colts weren't backing down after the Niners took the lead. They went right back down the field and Rivers connected with Pierce in the end zone for their second TD link up of the night. Rivers is 14/21 for 175 yards and two TDs. 

Just a couple plays after the fumble, McCaffrey caught the TD pass to put the Niners up by 7. McCaffrey has 67 yards on the ground and another 17 in the air. 

The Niners forced a fumble after their TD and they made the recovery inside the IND 30. 

Purdy and the Niners came swinging back with a deep TD pass to Robinson in their first drive of the game. 

It's been a hell of a half from Indy and 44 year old Phillip Rivers set the tone early on, driving his team down the field and hitting Alec Pierce for an opening drive TD.

What's next: Niners  

The Niners have to get through tonight in Indy before looking ahead but it only gets tougher for the final two weeks of the season. If they win tonight, they will return home for the rest of the season and set their sights on the Chicago Bears and the Seattle Seahawks. Both of those teams are in the hunt for the one seed in the NFC, so the Niners are going to have to beat the best to be the bet in the NFC at the end of the regular season. Buckle up Niners fans, it’s going to be a fun sprint to the playoffs. 

What's next: Colts 

The Colts know there is no margin for error over the next three games. They need to win, and a lot of help. First they have to win tonight at home against the four loss Niners, then they’d have to knock off the Jacksonville Jaguars in a home divisional match against a team that is going to be aiming to get the one seed in the AFC. If they manage to win the next two games, then they will be hoping that the Chargers can beat the Texans next week and set up an all or nothing game in Week 18 from Houston. 

NFC standings  

The Niners have clinched a playoff spot, but they want more than just a Wild Card spot, and they have a chance to make it happen. At 10-4 they can move level with the Rams and just a game back of the Seahawks who are currently the top seed in the NFC West and in the Conference. If they are going to earn home field advantage and the first round BYE, they are going to need to win out. They control their destiny, but it’s not going to be easy to win their next three games. 

AFC standings 

The Colts are still in the playoff race but they are going to need just about everything to go right for them from here on out. First they need to win tonight, and the rest of their games until the end of the season. They are also going to need the Houston Texans to lose next week in their game to the Chargers which is very possible. If that happens than they will have a chance to stun them on the final week of the season in a head to head match up. That’s the only team they have a chance to catch up to since the other Wild Card teams, the Chargers and Bills have 11 wins which puts them out of the Colts reach. 

Niners star watch 

It's not often that one of the top paid players in the history of the NFL flies under the radar, but after the Niners paid Brock Purdy the big bucks this summer, Purdy has had to deal with injuries that kept him out for most of the season. He played in Week 1 and 4, missed all of October, and then didn’t come back until mid November. Now, in the six games that he has started, the Niners are 5-1, and he is averaging 240 yards a game, and has thrown 12 TDs, but also has 7 INTs in just six games. The most important thing for Purdy is that he’s healthy in the postseason, and he might just have the Niners in position to win the one seed in the NFC if they win out. 

Colts star watch 

Obviously, Phillip Rivers isn't the same quarterback as he was back in his prime almost two decades ago, but you know that he’s going to his all to the Colts for the final three games of the season. The former 4th overall pick in the 2004 draft went 18/27 with a TD and 120 yards in his first NFL game since the first round of the playoffs in January of 2021. Let’s not forget that Rivers went to 8 Pro Bowls, led the NFL Passing in 2010, in TDs back in 2008 and was up for a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame before making his comeback which will push his candidacy back another five years. 

49ers last game 

The Niners, unlike the Colts, have won their last four and five of their last six to keep pace with the Seahawks and the Rams who have been getting plenty of attention for being the NFC's best team. The Niners have been rigiht along with them all year despite dealing with their roster getting decimated by injury. Last week Brock Purdy and the Niners hosted Tennessee and it was the Niners QB tossing three TDs, two in the third quarter to pull away from the Titans and keep pace with the rest of the top teams in the NFC West. 

Colts last game

Out of pure desperation, the Colts brought in 44 year old Philip Rivers to try and save their season after Daniel Jones went down with a torn achilles. With just a few days of practice under his best after being retired for the last five years. The threw a TD pass to Josh Downs, the only TD of the game for either side, as the Colts went up 13-3 on the 3 loss Seattle Seahawks but the Seahawks defense would lock down and their kicker would save the day. Jason Meyers hit six field goals on the day, including the game winner with 18 seconds left on the clock to keep the Seahawks in the hunt for the one seed and drop the Colts nearly out of playoff contention.

We are live from Indy  

Hello everyone and welcome to Indianapolis where the Colts are back home on the heels of the four game losing streak and desperately holding on to any hope of a post season run. They started as one of the hottest teams in the league, but injuries have hampered this team that was once on the top of the AFC, and now they are on the outside of the playoff picture looking in with three games to go. They need to beat the Niners tonight, but San Fran is in their own playoff chase as they looking to have a Wild Card locked up but have an outside chance of sneaking in and grabbing the one seed in the NFC.
