as.com

Head to head

These two teams haven’t always been division rivals, but the historical series dates back to 1976. They became division rivals back in 2002, and have played 52 total times. The Seahawks hold the overall advantage with 30 wins and 22 losses, but the Niners have had Seattle’s number in the last few seasons. The Niners have won the last five games including the last match up in December of last year when George Kittle sealed the 28-16 victory with a 44 yard TD early in the 4th quarter.

as.com

When will CMC return?

After sitting out Week 1, and then being put on the IR and then going to Germany to get his achilles repaired Christian McCaffery is still on the sidelines  for the game against the Seahawks. The Niners believe he will return this season, and there is talk that it will happen sooner rather than later. The Niners don’t want to rush him back and lose him for the rest of the season so they are exercising caution. Until he comes back, Jordan Mason is holding down the fort with 536 yards rushing in the first five games of the season. That’s good enough for second in the league but obviously he is not the reigning Offensive Player of the Year like McCaffery is.

Season recap: Niners

The Niners came into this season hoping and almost expecting for another deep playoff run, and maybe even a return trip to the Super Bowl. They took an early injury hit when Christian McCaffery was ruled out of the Week 1 match up with the Jets, and then was placed on IR citing calf and achilles problems. They would lose their next two games against the undefeated Vikings and then blow a double digit lead against the Rams the next week. They got a much needed match up with the Patriots, who they blew out at Levi’s Stadium but would then drop below .500 last week against the Cardinals.

Season recap: Seahawks

It was the dream start for the Seahawks in a year that they welcomed in a new coach on the sidelines after the Pete Carroll era ending in Seattle. Mike Macdonald led his team to three straight wins, albeit against some of the worst teams in the league. They beat the Broncos, who weren’t playing like they are these days, the Dolphins and the Patriots but people were still questioning how good this team was. They would make a statement in their primetime game against the Lions two weeks ago, when they took Detroit to the final bell before eventually losing. They might have made more of a statement with their loss than their three wins, but then they lost to the Giants the next week. So now we aren’t sure about this team. Tonight will give us a little clarity as to how serious of a contender this team is.

NFC Standings

Coming into Week 6, there are just two undefeated teams in the league. Both are on BYE which gives us a chance to take a look at the teams that are hovering around .500. It’s never easy to measure teams in the early part of the season. Often times the records don’t tell you everything there is to know about a team. The Seahawks are 3-2 and currently leading the NFC West while the Niners are 2-3 after five weeks. As the season goes on we obviously get a better grasp of who the good teams are and who the pretenders are. Tonight’s game will give us a good idea of which team is going to be the favorite to take the division title this season.

Star watch: Niners

The Niners have a loaded roster of explosive players on the offensive end even with Christian McCaffery on the bench. Jordan Mason has proven he can carry the load while the top RB in the game recovers. Deebo is back from an early injury and looking dangerous. Brandon Aiyuk seems to be finding his rhythm after missing preseason due to an ugly hold out. George Kittle is one of the top tight ends in the game. But it all comes down to Brock Purdy. Purdy sits right behind Geno Smith, averaging 274.8 yards passing per game which is 4th in the league. He has played well, but not well enough to help the Niners hold on to some of the leads that they have built up early in games. Tonight we can expect some fireworks, but look for the Niners to get a little conservative if they have a lead in the second half.

Star watch: Seahawks

For the last few years the Seahawks have been led by one man. An unlikely hero in a city that embraces the underdog like no other. Geno Smith spent almost his entire career as a back up until the Seahawks let Russell Wilson go and entrusted the long time back up with the starting role. He has brought the Seahawks to the playoffs, while putting up big numbers and breaking franchise records in the process. He comes into this primetime match up with the most passing yards in the league, averaging 293 yards per game. He’s going to need to have a big game tonight against a defense he knows well. Does the birthday boy have any surprises in store?

Last game: Niners

San Fran got off to a slow start in their last game against the Arizona Cardinals. Kyler Murray opened the game with a 50 yard scramble for a TD on the first drive of the day to send a warning sign to the Niners. Brock Purdy would even up the score with a TD pass to George Kittle, and a blocked field goal returned for a TD would put the Niners control heading into halftime. Kicker Jake Moody would get injured on the ensuing kickoff which would eventually force the Niners to go for it on 4th and 23 instead of kicking a 45 yard field goal. That would have put the Niners up by 13 but instead the Cardinals went down the field and scored a TD to cut the lead to 2. Jordan Mason fumbled inside the ARI 10 yard line on the next drive and the Cardinals would go down the field and take the lead with 70 seconds left on the clock to deal the Niners their 3rd loss in five games.

Last game: Seahawks

Seattle’s last game couldn’t have got off to a better start. Despite allowing the Giants to march down to the one yard line on their opening drive, they forced a fumble and took it 102 yards for a scoop and score. The Giants would respond and control the game on both sides of the ball for most of the four quarters, but a late fourth quarter TD brought the Seahawks with in a field goal right before the Two Minute Warning. Seattle forced a three and out and got the ball back with a chance to tie the game up with a field goal from 47 yards out but Bryce Ford-Wheaton’s blocked the FG and took it back for a TD to hand the Seahawks their second straight loss.

We are live from Seattle

Hello everyone and welcome to the Pacific Northwest where the Seahawks are back home looking to rebound from back to back losses after starting their season 3-0. Seattle got dominated by the Giants from start to finish last week, and now they host a Niners team desperate to extinguish the flame after a bumpy start to their season. The Niners blew a double digit lead for the second time in three weeks as they dropped below .500. We aren’t used to the Niners starting seasons off slowly. They have been the reference setters in the NFC, but have some work to do if they are going to get back to that elite status in the conference. San Fran can take their first step towards getting back on track tonight with a road win over a division rival.
