The Minnesota Vikings handed the San Francisco 49ers their second straight loss on Monday night as Kirk Cousins lit the Niners defense up for almost 400 yards in the 22-17 win from U.S. Bank Stadium.
CMC returns, Deebo sidelined
The Niners may have been coming off a loss in Cleveland but there was only one desperate team on the field in Minnesota. That was the Vikings and they played like it. The defense controlled Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffery on a night that Deebo Samuel was out with injury, as Jordan Addison played the role of Justin Jefferson with the star WR on the IR. Addison would end the night with 123 yards and two TDs.
The night couldn’t have started off any worse for Kirk Cousins who threw a pick on the third play of the game. Chavarious Ward ripped the ball out of Addison’s hand and set up the Niners with great field position just a minute and a half into the game. Christian McCaffery would give the ball right back to the Vikings five plays later when his fumble was recovered by Dean Lowry.
Cousins and Minnesota bounced back on the ensuing drive, going 89 yards down the field and capping off the TD drive with a 19 yards pass to Addison.
Addison’s TD before half turns game around
San Fran would miss another opportunity to put points on the board when Jake Moody missed a 40 yard field goal, just a week after missing the 41 yard field goal that would have won the game for the Niners in Cleveland.
Minnesota would take advantage of the good field position by going on another long drive that got inside the SF 5 yard line. San Fran's defense stood strong and held the Vikings out of the end zone after they had 1st and Goal from the 2 yard line, not just once but twice, on a night that the offense needed all the help they could get.
Brock Purdy finally got the offense into scoring range deep in the first half, and Christian McCaffery would take a three yard carry into the end zone to stretch his TD streak to 16 games and cut the lead to 10-7. That was supposed to give the Niners all the momentum going into the halftime break, but Addison got pay back on Ward for his earlier interception by ripping the ball out of Ward’s hands on a deep ball down the middle and taking it to the house for a 60 yard score seven seconds before halftime.
Cousins in control all night
The Vikings added to their lead on their first drive of the third quarter, but for the second time on the night, they were stopped on a goal to goal situation and had to settle for a Greg Joseph field goal to make it 19-7.
The defensive hold seemed to spur on the Niners offense who took just three plays to get into the end zone with Christian McCaffery’s second TD of the night, this one coming on a 35 yard TD catch and run.
Cousins would lead the Vikings down the field again and set up a fifth straight scoring drive against one of the top defenses in the league. Again the Niners held them to a field goal, this time Joseph hit it from 54 yards out to stretch the lead to 22-14 right before the start of the final quarter.
Bynum seals the deal
Cousins would end the night with his 50th 300+ yard game, throwing for 378 yards and two TDs after the early interception, out performing Brock Purdy who had 272 yards but threw two late picks that cost the Niners the game.
Moody would redeem himself with a 55 yard FG to cut the lead to five with 13:21 to go in the fourth, but that would be the last time the Niners would get on the scoreboard. Purdy would get picked off by Camryn Bynum twice in the final six minutes of the game and the Vikings held on to drop the Niners and hand them their second straight loss and win their third in four games.
Captain Swag is back at it! Big wins mean big ice, and Kirk Cousins was loving the SportCenter Top 10 chain Justing Jefferson adorned him with in the post game interview.
Cargando...
Camryn Bynum had himself a night. He picked off Purdy twice, including this game sealing INT with 30 seconds to go, and finished the game with 9 tackles.
Cargando...
McCaffery made things interesting midway through the third quarter with this 35 yard catch and run for his second TD of the night. He ended the night with 45 yards and a TD on the ground and 51 receiving yards and a TD.
Cargando...
After the McCaffery TD you though San Fran was going to go into the half with the momentum, Jordan Addison ripped this ball out of the hands of Chavarious Ward much like the DB did to him in the first half and took it 60 yards to the house to add to the Vikings lead going into the second half.
Cargando...
The Niners would finally get into the end zone right before the halftime break thanks to this Christian McCaffery three yard run that extended his TD streak to 16 games.
Cargando...
Kirk Cousins bounced back from his early pick, and would end up going wild on Monday night. Both of his TDs on the night found Jordan Addison, this was the first one from 19 yards to pout the first points on the board.
Cargando...
The Niners were stopped once they approached the red zone, but came up empty on two drives deep in Minnesota territory. McCaffery fumbled shortly after the INT by Cousins and Jake Moody missed a 40 yard field goal just a week after missing the game winner in Cleveland.
Cargando...
The Niners couldn't have asked for a better start. Chavarious Ward picked off Kirk Cousins on the third play of the game, but they couldn't turn the give away into points.

I'm taking the Vikings to cover, but I think the Niners wiin, 21-17
Vikings banged up
The hits keep coming for the Vikings who have already had a rough start to the season. They saw Justin Jefferson head to the IR after injuring his hamstring against the Chiefs in Week 5. Last week, they took a hit to the defense when Marcus Davenport went down with an ankle injury against the Bears last week. The Vikings will now have to carry on without two of their top players on both sides of the ball.

Run CMC ready for tonight
It was the worst possible scenario last week in Cleveland. The Niners saw their two biggest weapons on the offensive end get sidelined with injury against the best defense in the league. You got a glimpse of just how hard things can be with out the Niners best WR and top RB, and it was not pretty. Luckily for San Fran, they will get half of that duo back. Christian McCaffery was listed as questionable all week but is expected to play after suffering an oblique injury against the Browns. Unfortunately, Deebo Samuel will not dress tonight, as he continues to rehab a shoulder injury he suffered in the first half of last week’s loss to Cleveland.

Purdy licking his wounds
For the first time this year, we saw the Niners defense look weak. For the first time this season, we saw Brock Purdy look a little rattled. As a result, for the first time this year, the Niners found themselves in the loss column. Before last week, the San Fran QB had 9 TDs and no interceptions. He is still a young quarterback who, while handles himself like a vet, will have some moments where he looks like a young quarterback. Vikings last week
It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win for the Vikings last week in Chicago. No one had a particularly good game on the offensive end, Kirk Cousins passed for less than 200 yards and the top rusher was Alexander Mattison who had 44 yards, but it was enough to beat the Bears who saw Justin Fields have to leave the game with a dislocated finger. It was the defense that once again saved the day for the Vikings, picking up a fumble and taking for a TD for the second game in three weeks. Jordan Hicks scoop and score was enough to hold off the Bears as the defense protected their lead until the finish line.

Niners last week
It was the perfect storm that led to the Niners dropping to their first game of the season. They went up against the best defense in the league, and lost two of their biggest weapons on the offensive end all in the same day. Brock Purdy threw his first interception of the season, and even though the defense played well enough to win, it was the special teams that let San Fran down in the final moments of the game. After not being able to move the ball all game, Purdy still put the Niners in position to score. They drove 52 yards down field and set up a game winning field goal from 41 yards out, but Jake Moody missed it wide left and the Browns handed one of the league’s best teams their first loss.
