5 things you need to know about Arvell Reese, Ohio State’s top 2026 NFL Draft prospect

A name you should pay attention to at the 2026 NFL Combine is Arvell Reese, dynamic linebacker out of Ohio State drawing comparisons to Micah Parsons.

Update:

Arvell Reese, the dynamic linebacker from Ohio State, is one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft. Known for his versatility and athleticism, Reese has drawn attention from top teams and could go as high as No. 2 overall to the New York Jets, behind only Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza.

Reese made an immediate impression at the NFL Scouting Combine. Even a small mix-up on his podium nameplate (“Vell”) didn’t distract him from showing why he’s a player to watch. His poise, confidence, and willingness to talk about his role on the field highlighted a player ready for the next level.

“I’ll tell them outside linebacker or edge,” Reese said, reflecting on where he wants to play in the NFL. His adaptability is reminiscent of elite edge rushers like Micah Parsons, who also split time between off-ball linebacker duties and pass-rushing roles.

5 things to know about Arvell Reese

1. Versatile defender

As he mentioned at the Combine, Reese isn’t limited to one position. He played all over Ohio State’s front seven last season, lining up off-ball at linebacker but also moving to the edge in pass-rushing situations. Like Parsons was at Penn State, Reese is a hybrid defender who can create mismatches against any offense. Since Reese says he prefers outside linebacker or edge, NFL teams would have flexibility in how they deploy him.

2. Top draft potential

With athleticism, production, and versatility, Reese is already drawing attention from teams picking at the top of the 2026 draft. He’s expected to be one of the first (if not the first) non-quarterbacks off the board and has already met with the Jets, who hold the No. 2 pick. Combine week will only elevate his profile further.

3. College production

Reese was a key piece of Ohio State’s FBS-leading defense, which allowed just 9.3 points per game. While primarily an off-ball linebacker, he showed the ability to rush the passer when called upon, making him a multi-dimensional threat. His 6.5 sacks last season don’t fully capture his potential because he wasn’t rushing full-time, leaving plenty of upside for NFL teams.

4. Explosive athleticism

At the Combine, Reese is doing drills for both edge rushers and linebackers. Scouts are watching for speed, agility, and explosiveness, all of which are evident on tape. Reese hasn’t put a specific time goal on his 40-yard dash. His focus is simply on running fast and showing what he can do athletically. His Combine performance could cement his status as a top-three pick.

5. Room to grow

Despite his physical tools and versatility, Reese is candid about needing to refine parts of his game. He wants to improve in pass-rushing and coverage, but scouts see a player who can quickly adapt to the NFL. With his raw talent and ability to play multiple roles, Reese is considered a high-upside prospect who could make an immediate impact at the next level.

Reese is slated to perform his on-field drills later this week, with most edge- and linebacker-specific workouts scheduled for Thursday (February 26) at the Combine. Scouts and analysts will be paying close attention to his 40-yard dash, shuttle, and position drills, as well as his overall athleticism and technique, all of which could play a major role in determining just how high he climbs on draft boards.
