Apple TV’s ‘The Dynasty: New England Patriots dives into Tom Brady & Bill Belichick’s break up. When does it premiere?
Apple TV’s new series offers NFL fans an intimate look at the infamous breakup that occurred between arguably the greatest player and coach in history.
One is now retired and one is without a job, but the effect that Tom Brady and Bill Belichick had on football will live on for many years to come. Yet, as can often be the case, the relationship that existed between the two men and saw six Super Bowls won, did not end well. With that said, we will soon have more answers as to what happened and why.
Tom Brady & Bill Belichick: The Breakup
It was back in the first few months of 2020 when the man many consider to be the greatest player ever to play football brought an end to his time with the New England Patriots, a team that had seen unprecedented success over the years that preceded that moment. That’s to say, that with six Super Bowl titles to his name, star quarterback Tom Brady called time on his adventure with the Pats and so too what was seemingly a close relationship with the team’s coach, Bill Belichick. Now, while it’s not unheard of for players to look for fields anew when they’ve won everything there is to win, many got the feeling that all was not well between the pair, and with that the speculation ran rampant.
Of course, what came next only further fueled the idea that a critical mistake had been made by the Patriots. Brady went on to win a record seventh Super Bowl in his very first season with a new team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while Belichick began a four-year period with the Patriots which saw the team struggle immensely, ending eventually with the coach’s dismissal and rumblings of serious discontent being expressed by franchise owner Robert Kraft. Indeed, some reports even suggested that Kraft was irate when Brady won another title, having been told by Belichick that the signal caller was past his best i.e., the team could make it without him. So, the obvious question is what really happened?
Apple TV’s ‘The Dynasty’ spills the beans on Belichick & Brady
If we put all the pieces together, what we can assume is that there simply wasn’t enough room in New England for two men of that stature. That simple idea is something that a new docuseries from Apple TV+ goes in depth to show. ‘The Dynasty: New England Patriots’ according to the streaming platform will take us inside the relationship between Brady and Belichick, showing audiences just how bad things had become between the two men by the late 2010s. Early screenings of the series indicate that the show has pulled no punches
For his part, Brady himself has never truly given away anything, but what he has said does allude to the idea that there were some clear differences of opinion. “Me and coach Belichick, we did what we loved and competed for 20 years together,” Brady was quoted as saying by The Athletic. “But I wasn’t going to sign another contract (with the Patriots) even if I wanted to play until (I was) 50. Based on how things had gone, I wasn’t going to sign up for more of it.” Further to that, the report also referred to Belichick’s style as “dictatorial”, something that veteran wide receiver Wes Welker seems to confirm in the show as he compares Brady to “...an abused dog for continually going back to work for Belichick.” Ultimately, it will likely be seen as water under the bridge with both men having moved on. On the other hand, it’s worth noting that Belichick’s ‘style’ is something that has been seen as the reason why some teams in the league haven’t shown more interest in signing one of the most successful coaches in the game’s history. ‘The Dynasty: New England Patriots’ is set to premiere on Apple TV+ this Friday, February 16th.
