After a month of speculation, it is now a reality that Atlanta Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell will sign a new four-year contract extension with the team.

The Falcons continue to move the market before the NFL regular season begins. After singing the four-time Pro Bowler linebacker Matt Judon from the New England Patriots and two-time Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons, general manager Terry Fontenot still had one pending task: securing Terrell’s contract.

“Terry is upstairs busy right now. Who knows what’s going to happen after we come out of practice today? You guys might have more reports and ask me more questions tomorrow,” said the Falcons’s head coach, Raheem Morris, when asked if the team still had unfinished business with player additions. Although it is not an addition as such, the Falcons CB, who was chosen as pick 16 in the 2020 NFL Draft, secured his future with the team.

How much is A.J. Terrel’s new contract with the Falcons worth?

Adam Schefter reported that A.J. Terrell’s new contract with the Falcons will be worth $81 million. What’s more, the deal fully guarantees the player to receive $65.8 million, becoming the second-highest-paid CB in NFL history and the highest CB deal made during this offseason.

The 25-year-old player was entering the final year of his rookie contract, which stipulated a sum of $12.34 million, far away from the $20.25 million he will earn annually with this new contract; only the Green Bay Packers CB Jaire Alexander has a bigger contract ($21 million per year).

Despite the rumors during this last month, Terrell assured that the priority was the team and that he would not abandon the training camp. “That’s the beauty of it, like right now I’m so focused on just being with the team and being involved and just let my agent work his moves and do what he does. That’s easy for me to just come out to work and not think about it and know that it’s in good hands”.

The Falcons now aim to start the NFL regular season in the best possible way against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on 8 September.
