Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield’s NFL career has been up and down, but fortunately for him, he’s on an up right now. Since joining the team last season, Mayfield has only improved. So far this season, he is second in passing touchdowns (eight), has thrown just two interceptions, and is fourth in passer rating. His average time to throw the ball is 2.68 seconds, the fourth-shortest in the league, and his 5.5 air yards per attempt are the fewest in the NFL.

Fortunately for the Bucs, Mayfield is there to stay for a little while longer.

Baker Mayfield’s contract with Tampa Bay

When Mayfield signed with the Bucs last year, it was initially just a one-year deal. After earning his first Pro Bowl nod, setting career highs in touchdown passes and yards, and leading the team to the Divisional Round of the playoffs, Tampa Bay decided they’d keep him around a little longer.

In March 2024, the Buccaneers signed Mayfield to a three-year, $100 million contract extension with $50 million guaranteed. His average annual salary is now $33.33 million. In 2024, he’ll earn $30 million with all of it guaranteed. In 2025, he’ll earn $30 million with $20 million guaranteed, and in 2026, he’ll earn $40 million.

Basically, it’s a two-year deal for $60 million with the contract including an out after two years. Mayfield has those two years to prove he deserves the $40 million in 2026. The incentives include $5 million every year, making the max value of the contract $115 million. Essentially, if he plays well, Mayfield has the opportunity to earn a lot of money, while the Bucs avoid a long-term commitment in case he doesn’t. So far, he’s been playing like a quarterback worth the money.
