Baltimore Ravens 28 vs 29 Washington Commanders summary: stats and highlights | NFL Preseason
The streak is finally over! The Washington Commanders put an end to the Baltimore Ravens’ 24 game preseason win streak with comeback win in the fourth quarter. Joey Slye hit the go ahead field goal with 10 second remaining in the Commanders 29-28 win from FedEx Field.
QB play excellent on both ends
There are a lot of preseason games where it seems like we are just going through the motions. Coaches don’t want to gamble too much, so we see a lot of dinks and dunks, and a whole lot of short possessions. This was not one of those games. Both teams opened up the playbook and all four quarters felt like a regular season game.
Lamar Jackson was in street clothes watching the Ravens second preseason game, and Josh Johnson got the start under center. He wasted no time getting Baltimore into the end zone, driving right down the field in 7 plays and found Zay Flowers on a 26 yard catch and run for the opening score of the game.
Sam Howell made his case to be the first string QB with a fantastic performance from FedEx Field on Monday night. The second year quarterback is the most likely to be starting under center Week 1 and after Monday night his case has only been strengthened.
21 points in final 2 minutes of first half
The Commanders scored on their first drive of the night, but they were held to a field goal, and despite some great play from their quarterback it took them until after the Two Minute Warning to get into the end zone. Howell hit Antonio Gibson out of the backfield for a 7 yard TD pass to take the lead.
Johnson and the Ravens responded in three plays, going 75 yards down the field and taking the lead with just over a minute to go in the half with a touchdown pass to Tylan Wallace.
That minute left on the clock was enough time for Howell to put his team up going into the halftime break. After a ten play, 1:22 drive, Howell found Dymai Brown to complete his fantastic half as the starter, going 19/25 for 188 lads and 2 TD. Johnson would have had an even better night going 10/12 for 145, but threw an interception that led to the Commanders first TD.
Fromm sets up Slye game winner
The Commanders led 17-14 after the first half and the action didn’t slow down after the break. Anthony Brown led his team to a touchdown on the opening drive of the third quarter as the Ravens would lead 21-20 heading into the fourth quarter.
Brown connected on two touchdown passes to Travis Vokolek in the second half, once in the third quarter and once in the fourth quarter to put the Ravens up eight with 14 minutes to go in the game.
Jake Fromm played the fourth quarter after a brief stint for Jacoby Brissett under center for the Commanders. Fromm had a late TD drive to give the Commanders a glimmer of hope as he found Jarrett Patterson for a fantastic 15 yard TD catch and run to cut the lead to two after a failed two point conversion.
Washington got the ball back and Fromm moved his team into field goal position in a long drive that took time off the clock and set up Joey Slye’s go ahead field goal with 10 second on the clock.
Fromm got the ball back and set up a game winning kick from 49 yards out that Joey Slye banged through the uprights to secure the win for the Commanders.
Jake Fromm came in for the final quarter and he led the charge that ended the Ravens 24 game preseason win streak. This pass to Jarrett Patterson brough WAS to within two after the missed two point conversion.
The Chris Rodriguez fumble gave the Ravens great field position and they would take advantage with a second TD connection between Brown and Travis Volonek.
Anthony Brown replaced Johnson to start the second half, but it was more of the same for the Ravens. Baltimore scored on their opening drive of the third quarter to tak a 21-17 lead.
Howell and the Commanders got the ball back with under a minute to go and he marched his side down the field and took the lead back in the two minute offense with this dime to Dyami Brown.
The Ravens punched right back, taking the lead back with a three play, 75 yard drive in a matter of seconds.
Sam Howell played out of his mind on Monday night, but didn't get the Commanders in the endzone until after the Two Minute Warning in the first half.
It looked like the Ravens were going to take a commanding lead in the second quarter, but Jartavius Martin came up with a huge interception in the end zone and took it back into BAL territory to set up a TD drive for Washington.
Josh Johnson had a terrific night for the Ravens, starting with this opening drive TD pass to Zay Flowers.

WE ARE UNDERWAY FROM FEDEX FIELD!!!
THE BROADCAST HAS STARTED ON ESPN AND HOW GREAT IS IT HEARING JOE BUCK AND TROY AIKMAN BACK ON THE AIRWAYS???
Ravens running backs
It doesn’t seem who the Ravens put in the backfield, they always seem to have to success running the ball. I guess when you are led by Lamar Jackson, it’s not too hard to bump up the rushing stats, but last year they were decimated at the RB position as they suffered injury after injury. Jackson led all rushers with 764 yards, but J.K. Dobbins had 520 yards in 8 games, Gus Edwards and Kenyan Drake flirted with 500 yards in shortened seasons. This year Dobbins is likely to get the majority of the carries if he can stay healthy, but there are always some viable back ups in Baltimore, and we should get a look at them tonight.
Sticky situation at QB
Let’s stop and think when Washington actually had a QB1, NFL caliber quarterback running the offense. Since Kirk Cousins left in 2017, Alex Smith, Josh Johnson, Colt McCoy, Mark Sanchez, Case Keenum, Dwayne Haskins, Kyle Allen, Taylor Heinicke Ryan Fitzpatrick, Garrett Gilbert, Carson Wentz and Sam Howell have all been the starting QBs in the nation’s capital. Howell might be the incumbent starter after starting the last few games of last season, but this list should show you, no quarterback is safe in Washington. The second year QB will be trying to fend off Josh Johnson and Jake Fromm tonight and next week as we inch towards Week 1.
Jackson in Baltimore for the long haul
To no surprise, we didn’t see any of Lamar Jackson, J.K. Dobbins or headline offseason signing Odell Beckham Jr. in the first game of the regular season and don’t expect to see them tonight. Lamar Jackson signed one of the richest contracts in the history of the sport this offseason, and it would be catastrophic to see him get injured before the start of the season. He will be under center for Week 1 and Ravens fans will be hoping that their franchise quarterback can start and finish a season, which is something he hasn’t been able to do over the last two seasons.
Ravens make short trip
Somehow, someway, the Ravens have figured this preseason thing out. They have won 24 straight preseason games dating back to last decade, which tells you a lot about how Jim Harbaugh prepares his team from top to bottom. It’s one of the wildest stats in football when you think about it. Think of all the guys who have come and gone. All of the guys who have been cut or traded or were no use to the team, but in a direct or indirect way all of those guys are tied to this record. Tonight they put history on the line against their next door neighbors.
Washington back in the nations capitol
The Commanders welcome their neighbors from just up the road to FedEx Field tonight, looking to hand the Ravens their first loss in 25 preseason games. During this span, the Ravens have won five straight against Washington. Tonight Ron Rivera’s side will be looking to end the Ravens streak, but the priority will be getting the guys who are lower down the depth chart a chance to earn a roster spot while polishing off the backups early season performances.
Commanders last game
After giving up a safety in the first quarter, the Commanders defense locked down for the final three quarters as Sam Howell led Washington on the offensive end. He played the first quarter and a half and connected on a 26 yard pass to Jahan Dotson for the first TD of the game. Jacoby Brissett came in on the next possession and he led the Commanders down the field on an 89 yard drive that was polished off with a 12 yard scramble from the Commanders QB 1 candidate. Preseason sensation Dorian Thompson-Robinson started the second half under center for the Browns and put Cleveland in FG position, which they missed, and then the rookie threw for a TD on his next drive. DTR would head to the bench for the final quarter and Kellen Mond threw a TD pass with under 2:00 to play but the Two Point Conversion fell incomplete and Washington held on for the win.
Ravens last game
]The Baltimore first teamers sat out last week’s preseason opener against the Eagles last week, but the backups kept the Ravens incredible preseason win streak alive with a narrow 20-19 win over last year’s NFC Champions. Josh Johnson got the start and played the entire first half, throwing a touchdown and leading a late field goal drive capped off by Justin Tucker’s 60 yard field goal to pull to within three points. Tyler Huntley started the second half and immediately gave the Ravens the lead with an opening drive TD, but Anthony Brown let the Ravens back in the game when he threw a pick-six in the fourth quarter. Philly went for the win looking to end the Baltimore win streak on two point conversion, but failed to take the lead on the missed conversion. They had one more chance to put points on the boards but Phily turned it over on downs with 2:20 to go and the Ravens run game ran the clock out
We are live from FedEx Field
Hello everyone and welcome to the Nation’s Capital where the Commanders are coming into tonight on the heels of a win, but with plenty of question marks circling over the stadium here in Summerfield, Maryland. The Ravens made sure to take care of priority one, which was signing Lamar Jackson to a long term contract. During training camp and preseason they will be hoping to build the strongest team possible around him so Baltimore can get back in contention in the AFC.
