Update:

The Chicago Bears are in the process of trying turning the tides in the Windy City, and they are trying to build a team that can compete for the years to come. On Wednesday they showed their trust in one of their quarterbacks, but probably not the one you are thinking of.

Bagent’s long road

It wasn’t Caleb Williams who got the vote of confidence from the Bears’ front office. It was back up QB Tyson Bagent who agreed to a two year deal worth $10 million, and the third year QB got emotional in the press conference after he signed on the dotted line.

“A lot of people don’t know this, but my dad is – he’s my right hand man and he didn’t even have running water until he was in high school,” Bagent said. “There’s definitely a lot of things—and people that I could certainly help with this gift I’ve been blessed with. Just little things like that. I don’t really know anybody back at home with any money, so it feels good. It’s certainly a weight off my shoulders and my family’s shoulders. It definitely means a lot.”

Bagent, who went undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft was singed by the Bears after spending five years at Division II school Shepherd University. It’s been a long road for he and his family, and on Tuesday the kid was looked over in the combine just a few years ago signed a multi million dollar deal.

Bagent “one of the hardest workers on team”

Chicago’s quarterback troubles have been well documented over the last decade or so. They have gone through a seemingly endless quarterback carrousel, and with the contract extension signed by Bagent, he becomes the first QB to renew his deal with the franchise since Jay Cutler back in 2014.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles showered praise on the back up QB after the deal was announced saint the Bears are fortunate to have Bagent stay in the Windy City. “He is one of the hardest workers on our team and in addition to being a great competitor and teammate, he is a catalyst for positive influence throughout our entire organization,” said the GM.

Because Bagent went undrafted, he was eligible to sign a new deal before the rookies who got drafted in the class in which he was skipped over. In 2023 he played four games going 2-2, passing for 776 yards, three TDs and five INTs when Justin Fields went down. Last year he threw just two passes, completing both for 11 yards. This year he is going to back up Caleb Williams again, but the Bears know if anything happens to their face of the franchise, they will be in good hands with Bagent.
