Bears 15 - 18 Commanders Jayden Daniels Hail Mary: summary, stats and scores | NFL Week 8
THE FINAL PLAY FROM WASHINGTON AND IT'S ONE YOU WILL SEE FOR DECADES TO COME!!!! DANIELS TOPS WILLIAMS AS THE COMMANDERS BEAT THE BEARS WITH A LAST SECOND HAIL MARY CAUGHT BY BROWN!!!
Jayden Daniels couldn't have been any more relaxed after the last second win. He gave all the glory to the big guy above, as his Hail Mary perhaps got a little divine intervention on the game winning play. It's a play we won't get sick of seeing, unless you are a Bears fan of course.
Here's more details of Jayden Daniels' contract.
Listen to Tony Romo's analysis of the play made by Noah Brown. Everyone was focused on the ball and Brown just snuck in behind the pack knowing that a deflection was a possibility. Daniels will get the headlines but the smart play by Brown is what won the Commanders the game.
Even without the game winning Hail Mary, Jaden Daniels was the better quarterback at least statically in the battle of rookie QBs. Caleb Williams was 10/24 for 131 yards, and made some big plays late down the stretch to put his team in a position to win. Daniels made sure not just to beat him on the stats sheets, he also made the biggest play of his young career, and the biggest play for this franchise in a very, very long time. Daniels went 21/38 for 326 yards and this touchdown that you will see for the rest of your life.
These two are set for a long, and fascinating rivalry in the NFC, and if Game 1 of the series is any indication of what awaits us, then we are in for a treat.
The Bears defense would hold the Commanders to a three and out and the Bears picked up right where they left off marching down the field and moving the ball to the 1 yard line after a pass interference in the end zone. Roschon Johnson punched the ball in with 25 seconds left to give the Bears their first lead of the game.
The Bears' touchdown changed the momentum in the game. Swift started running the ball easier, which means that the passing game finally opened up for Williams. He marched the Bears down the field, but Chicago went to their bag of tricks and tried to hand it off to their back up center from a yard out but fumbled the handoff and Jer'Zhan Newton came up with the fumble recovery at the 3 yard line!
The Commanders would kick another field goal to stretch the lead to 12-0 early in the 3rd quarter, but they allowed the Bears to hang around with their inability to get into the end zone. With the passing game flat lining, D'Andre Swift had to step up and bring the offense to life. He did so with this 56 yard sprint down the left side line to put the Bears on the board after 44 minutes.
This was a battle of the top two QBs taken with the top two picks in the draft, but Williams looked lost in the first half. He came up with a couple of dazzling escape acts, but he would also make the occasional bad play, like taking this sack that pushed the Bears out of FG range late in the 1st half.
The Commanders defense dominated for most of the night, and held Caleb Williams to just 3 completions in the first half and just 36 yards passing through three quarters. They stopped the Bears on this 4th down conversion, and that led to the third field goal of Siebert's afternoon.
Jayden Daniels and the Commanders came out firing, scoring on their first three drives, but they were held to field goals on all three of those drives. Daniels came out looking the more comfortable of the rookie QBs, going for a few big plays in the first half including this 61 yard connection to Terri McLaurin. That would lead to the Commanders second field goal of the day. Austin Siebert had a great night kicking the field goal, but would miss a big one late.
The Washington Commanders pulled off one of the most dramatic wins in recent NFL history with a last second Hail Mary as No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniles topped No. 1 pick Caleb WIlliams and the Chicago Bears.
Daniels was questionable coming into the Sunday afternoon game from Landover after suffering a rib injury in last week's blow out win over the Carolina Panthers. He was given the green light just a few hours before kickoff, and he showed no signs of discomfort throwing the ball and no fear running the ball.
That's a play we are going to be talking about for a long time, but let's try and go back through the what lead to that play the highlights to what was a tight, but low scoring affair.

WE ARE UNDERWAY FROM WASHINGTON!!!
Tonight's odds
Taking a look at today’s odds, we see the Bears coming into this massive NFC matchup as the slight underdogs on the road. Washington is -1, and the Over/Under is set at 46.
Daniels hasn’t just been the best rookie in the NFL, he has been one of the best QBs in the NFL. He’s back under center, and I like the Commanders today. I think the Bears BYE week came at the wrong time. They were rolling, but the week off might have thrown off that rhythm.
Commanders win 24-16.
NFC Standings
Having a look at the NFC we see both of these two loss teams at the top of the conference, trailing the Lions by one game. The Commanders are at the top of the NFC East after their surprising start, but the Bears are at the bottom of the NFC North somehow despite winning four of their first six games. That is most likely going to be the toughest division to win, but don’t sleep on the NFC East which has the Cowboys looking to turn the season around and the Eagles starting to take flight.
Star watch: Bears
It wasn’t the smoothest of starts for Caleb Williams who went to the best team of any of the top three QBs taken in the draft. Offensive line problems made life difficult for the rookie, and he struggled in the first couple games, but started to find his footing in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts. He had 363 yards and two TDs in a game that he passed the ball 52 times. They lost that game, but e would find his rhythm after that game. He has 7 TDs and 1 INT in the three games since and has completed 69% of more of his passes in each of those games. On the season, he has 1,317 yards, 9 TDs and 5 INTs and another 169 yards rushing. He is learning that he doesn’t have to do everything and sometimes less is more. Today, he will be looking to outdo his Draft counterpart in the first of many matchups to come.
Star watch: Commanders
What we are seeing from Jayden Daniels has been nothing short of spectacular. The rookie has come into the league and not just shown he can play at the next level. He is looking like one of the top gun slingers in the league through the first half of the season. His 75.6% completion percentage is the best in the league and he has 1,410 yards, 6 TDs and just 2 INTs and his 107.1 RTG is top 7 in the league. He also can stretch a defense out with his feet. He’s got 372 yards on 66 carries, but he has to be a bit more careful while scrambling out of the pocket. He is the golden ticket for this team and they need to protect him at all costs, and he needs to protect himself as well.
Daniels is a go for battle of the rookie QBs
Commanders Stadium was shadowed with a dark cloud of concern last week when Jayden Daniels went to the locker room and came out in street clothes in the first half of the blow out win against the Panthers. He suffered an injury on the opening drive of the game, and had to watch from the sidelines as Marcus Mariota led Commanders the rest of the way. Obviously the Washington fans want their QB under center for every game, but this game especially considering who will be under center for the other team. Daniels participated in practice on Friday and will play today according to reports, although he is still considered a game time decision.
Season recap: Commanders
We weren’t really sure what to expect from the Commanders after they had a complete change of power in the nation’s capital. They changed coaches, took Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick but this was a bad team last year, and they weren’t supposed to be a contender already. They lost their opener to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but then Jayden Daniels locked in and started to look like a top quarterback in his first few games in the league. He beat the Giants and the Bengals with a couple of brilliant performances in tight games, and then went into Arizona and blew out the Cardinals before wiping out the Browns in Week 6. Lamar Jackson and the Ravens would hand the Commanders their second loss of the season, but the Washington hung tight with one of the top teams in the league to prove they are worthy of their record. Last week the Commanders got back into the win column by asserting their dominance on a Panthers team that looked lost from the start.
Season recap: Bears
After getting the No. 1 overall pick in a trade with the Panthers last year, the Bears selected Caleb Williams who was the long awaited favorite for the top pick in the draft for the last few years. They got an opening weekend win over the Titans in an ugly offensive game for Williams and the Bears. The defense did the heavy lifting and carried them to victory against Tennessee but they would lose their next two against the Texans and the Colts in one possession games. They would respond with a narrow victory over the LA Rams to start their win streak, and then blow out the Panthers and the Jags to go into their BYE week 4-2. It was the defense keeping the Bears in the games in the first few weeks of the season, but it seems like Williams has caught up to the rest of his teammates and is now capable of winning games for the Bears just 8 weeks into the season.
Last game: Commanders
The Commanders put a spanking on the Carolina Panthers last week, even without their sensational quarterback who was sidelined after the first series of the game. The game started with an interception that was ran back for a TD, but the Commanders would get a scare once Jayden Daniels and the offense got the ball. The rookie QB broke a big run but was wrapped up from behind and would eventually leave the game with a rib injury. Marcus Mariota would take over and go 18/23 with 205 yards and two TDs and the run game went for another 214 yards as Washington cruised to victory over the Panthers to set up this mouthwatering match up between two two-loss teams led by rookie QBs.
Last game: Bears
It seems like a while ago, but the Bears last game was played across the pond as Chicago took on the Jacksonville Jaguars in their home away from home. After a slow first quarter, the Williams and the Bears caught fire as the rookie QB hit Cole Kmet with two TD passes before the halftime break. Chicago controlled the ground game, totaling 152 yards rushing with D’Andre Swift accounting for 91 of those yards as the Bears would add to their lead in the second half. Williams added another two passing TDs in a game where he went for 226 yards and four TDs while completing almost 80% of his passes.
We are live from Commanders Stadium
Hello everyone and welcome to Landover where the Commanders are back at home after a blow out win over the Carolina Panthers. It came at a cost as rookie QB Jayden Daniels missed almost the entire game after suffering a rib injury on the opening series. Washington still cruised to victory over one of the weakest teams in the league, but it left their QB questionable for this afternoon’s match up against the Bears. Chicago comes into to this game on a three game win streak following their win in London over the Jaguars and a BYE week that gave this team some much needed rest. Now Caleb Williams and the Bears are trying to keep the win streak alive as they attempt to keep pace with the other teams in the NFL’s strongest division, the NFC North.
