Tom Brady and Bill Belichick cemented the greatest era a football team has ever built. For two decades the QB and coach had the New England Patriots at the top of the NFL, and in a rare sound clip from coach Belichick, he is tipping the cap to his former signal caller.
From the Golden Age to the Dark Ags
Pats fans and those in the Foxborough area are going through would historians would like to refer to as the “Dark Ages.” They memories of a one great team are still alive, but they seem long in the rearview after a couple of wretched season’s that have brought a gray cloud of misery over Gillette Stadium over the past few years.
For decades we thought that the duo of Belichick and Brady were a symbiotic duo that allowed one and other to not just survive but flourish. Brady was the player with the most Super Bowls, and Belichick was the coach with the most Super Bowls. But all good things come to an end and in 2020 Tom Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Bucs, and the question arose: who was responsible for the success in New England, Tom or Bill?
It didn’t take long for that argument to clear up as Brady went down to Tampa and immediately won a Super Bowl with the Bucs, leaving the count Brady: 7 - Belichick: 6. Belichick went on to struggle without Brady producing only one winning season, and one playoff apperance over the next four years. Now, a year removed from his firing in Foxborough, Belichick has tipped his cap to the greatest of all time when on SiriusXM’s “Let’s Go” podcast.
While acknowledging the great players he’s had in his day with the show’s most Jim Gray, Belichick said, “Players win games. You can’t win games without good players,” Belichick said. “I don’t care who the coach is, it’s impossible. You can’t win without good players.”
Gray responded saying: “they didn’t name it the Starr Trophy, it’s named the Lombardi Trophy,” referring to Bart Starr who was Vince Lombardi’s QB in Green Bay for their championship run in the 60s.
Belichick retorted: “Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy. He won seven of them.”
