Update:

The Cincinnati Bengals were expected to be contenders to make a deep postseason run in 2024, but that dream fell fantastically short of being realized. Instead, they finished the season with a 9-8 record, third place in the AFC North behind the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers, and missed the postseason completely.

Now, they’re looking to change up the roster to become contenders again in the 2025 season and to start off, they’ve released a veteran player and former Super Bowl champion.

Bengals release Alex Cappa

Veteran guard Alex Cappa joined the Bengals in 2022, signing a four-year, $35 million contract. Unfortunately, he didn’t play up to expectations last season, finishing last among all guards in pressures (51), hurries (36), and sacks allowed (8).

It was disappointing for the Bengals as Cappa has experience as a Super Bowl champion and they were hoping he’d bring that experience and that performance to the team. Cappa was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018 and by 2020, he’d helped bring them to Super Bowl LV victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. It was the next season that he joined the Bengals.

Cappa won’t get another shot with the Bengals though as NFL insider Ian Rappoport reported that the team released him.

Cappa was set to enter his final contract year, but his release frees up about $17.6 million in cap space. That gives them more capital for wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins as well as defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who are all expecting new deals this year.
