Bengals star takes top spot as NFL sack leader

The Cincinnati Bengals defence made some key interventions against the Pittsburgh Steelers, leaving Trey Hendrickson at the top of the standings.

The Cincinnati Bengals went into the last game of the regular season needing a win and other results to go their way to make it to the playoffs.

Their postseason fate still hangs in the balance but there is a chance at history for Trey Hendrickson, who could became the first Bengals player to win the NFL sack title since sacks were officially recorded in 1982. Hendrickson claimed his 15th sack of the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers, stopping quarterback Russell Wilson in his tracks.

That sack took Hendrickson ahead of his closest rival for the crown, Cleveland Browns' Myles Garrett, and he continued that dominant form against the Steelers. He ended the game with 3.5 sacks, taking his tally to 17.5 sacks this season. Hendrickson is in pole position but has insisted that he is not focusing on individual accolades.

“I’m much more excited about helping this team have a winning record.” Hendrickson explained earlier this week: “That’s the thing we want to do. End on a high note and if I do what I’m supposed to do, everything will take care of itself.”

NFL Sack Leaders 2024

  • 1. Trey Hendrickson - 15.0
  • 2. Myles Garrett - 14.0
  • 3. Danielle Hunter - 12.0
  • =4. Kyle Van Noy - 11.5
  • =4. T.J. Watt - 11.5

The Bengals boast many of the league’s top performers from the 2024 season, including passing yards leader Joe Burrow and receiving yards leader Ja’Marr Chase. Failure to make it to the playoffs would be a disaster for this exciting Bengals team and Hendrickson is only too aware of the talent at their disposal.

“Anytime you’re in the conversation with a Defensive Player of the Year and a first-round draft pick in my draft. who’s one of the most talented pass rushers in the National Football League, that’s rarified air,” Hendrickson told reporters. “I give a lot of credit to Myles and what he’s done for his team, I’m blessed to have the opportunity to do things like that for Cincinnati.”
