Bengals vs. Bears summary, stats, scores and highlights | NFL Preseason Week 3

Bagent connected with Pettis for a second time in a matter of minutes following a fumble by Rocky Lombardi. A couple plays later Bagent and Pettis connected on this 25 yard pass to stretch the lead to 24-3. 

There is plenty excitement surrounding the Bears heading into the regular season, and it doesn't just revolve around Caleb Williams. The defense showed up and looked like a real Chicago defense, Bagent had a nice day throwing the rock, and the fans will go home pumped up about what is to come in the Windy City. The Bengals didn't have too much to get excited about, but they also didn't play their starters, so we will see what they decide to do with their starters next week. 

The Bengals will play the Colts next week, while the Bears the Chiefs in the final preseason tune up before Week 1. 

Bagent took over in the third quarter and was as close to perfect as you could be. He threw two TDs on just eight throws. He and Dante Pettis look to have developed quite a relationship on the second team, but both of those guys will be hoping for a Week 1 start in a couple weeks. 

Terrel Smith got the pick after undercutting the route, but it was the pressure that Chicago was applying on Woodside. They sacked Woodside twice but were in his face for all three quarters that the back up played. 

This was the final play of Williams' day and his final drive was enough to show Chicago fans exactly what they are getting. He can go through his progressions, he can escape the pocket and throw on the move and he can use his legs to break down a defense. 

He ended the day 6/13 for 75 yards and ran it once for this 7 yard TD. He looks ready to be the starter, but Tyson Bagent proved he's not going down without a fight. 

Caleb Williams' day ended well, but the first three drives ended in three-and-outs. The interception from Amen Ogbongbemiga set up a Chris Santos field goal, and that seemed to open open the flood gates. 

Williams played the whole first half, but looked most comfortable on the final drive of the second quarter. He got out of the pocket with a little swivel and found rookie receiver Rome Odunze on a 45 yard dime moving to his left. 

The Chicago Bears stayed undefeated after their third preseason matchup, and got a glimpse at the future as Caleb Williams had a few flashes of brilliance that will have the Windy City buzzing. 

While Williams is going to get all of the headlines, it was the defense that gave Logan Woodside headaches all day. Woodside started undercenter as Burrow sat on Saturday after noon from Chicago. He was sacked twice, and pressured a handful of other times, two of those pressures led to interceptions.

Jones gets it back and he takes it for 7 yards this time.

Jones gets stopped for no gain on the run up the middle.

CHI get the ball back from their 36 an Rypien finds Swain on a deep slant, and he takes that for 25 yards to start the drive.

Lombardi looking right for Butler but Moore sniffed that pass out and almost picked it.

Hardy applying the pressure again and Lombardi had to throw that ball into the dirt.

Great punt from Waltman but his guys couldn't keep it out of the end zone, and the Bengals will get the ball at the 20.

Rypen under center, and he finds Wheeler out of the backfield on the right side for a 5 yard gain.

After a false start backs Cincy up five yards, Lombardi finds Cain out of the backfield but that completion over the middle gets about 8 yards a few short of the marker.

Cain with the carry out of the shotgun and he gets brought down after a gain of two.

Lombardi's pass to the left side finds McLachlan and he turns up field for the the 11 yard catch and run for a first down.

Cain gets the handoff up the middle but was stopped for no gain.

CIN take over from the 19 and Lombardi's pass to Lassiter falls incomplete.

Lombardi kept it, Hardy jarred it out and Randolph was there for the recovery as the Bears come up with their 3rd turnover of the day.

Cain finds a hole on the left side for a 7 yard gain to move the chains.

Lombardi on the roll out and he tucks it and runs for a 6 yard scramble.

Lombardi in at QB and he finds Lassiter for a first down on a short pass to the right side for 5 yards.

Cain gets the handoff out of the shotgun and gets just a yard.

Cain up the middle and he finds a hole for a nice 11 yard chunk on first and long.

CIN take over from their 15 yard line, and they need some points on the board, but a too many men on the field flag backs up the Bengals. 

Bad starts for Cincy. 

Bagent has been just about perfect since coming in to start the half. He's got a couple TDs, this one back to his favorite WR Pettis. 

Jones gets the pitch to the right side and he gets back to the line of scrimmage, no further.

Play action from Bagent and that opens up Pettis down the seam for a 24 yard gain and a first down!

CHI take over from their 44 and Jones takes the first down carry to the right side for 7 yards.

Pressure came from Chicago and Woodside tried to spin out of traffic, but he spun right into Hardy for a loss of 13.

Pass to Cain out of the backfield and he is hit at the line of scrimmage by Stroman and is dropped after a gain of one.

CIN get the ball back from their 15 after another flag on the return. 

Pitch to the left side for Cain and he is dropped in the backfield for a loss of 1.

On his first drive of the game, Tyson Bagent finds Pettis in the corner for the TD on the third down conversion. He was 3/4 for 30 yards on his first possession. 

For the second time today, pressure gets to Woodside and it forces him into an interception. This time it was Smith who came up with the pick and run back. 

Bagent rolls to the right side and had Homer, but that fast ball was a little too tough to catch for the RB.

Homer goes left and gets stopped at the line of scrimmage. 

2nd and Goal from the 4. 

Homer up the middle and he gets a yard to bring up first and goal.

Out route from Carlson and he makes the catch, turns and drags a couple defender for a 9 yard gain.

Homer with another handoff out of the shotgun and he moves the chains with a two yard run up the middle.

Webster to the right sideline on the end around and he picks up 9 yards first down.

Bagent over the middle and he finds Scott over the middle for a gain of 17 yards.

Homer gets the handoff out of the shotgun from Bagent who is in at QB. That run goes for no gain on first down.

Woodside looking for Burgess on the out route, but Smith was undercut the route for the interception, and ran it back to the CIN 42.

Woodside with a short pass off his back foot to the left side to Ali but it was a bit behind the WR and the pass falls incomplete.

Collins up the middle and he gets a yard on first down.

Screen pass in the flat to Burgess on the right side and he follows his defenders for a first down and a gain of 12.

Woodside rolls to the left side and scrambles for a first down after a pump fake froze the defender. A personal foul for unnecessary roughness on CHI will give CIN an extra 15.

Woodside throws it into the dirt after the Bears sniffed out the screen.

Collins gets the handoff to the right side and he picks up 4 yards on first down. 

2nd and 6 from the CIN 16. 

WE ARE BACK IN PLAY FOR THE SECOND HALF OF ACTION FROM CHICAGO. 

CIN get the ball from the 12 after a flag on the run back. 

Did we mention he can run the rock too? Caleb waited as long as he could to let this ball go, but when nothing opened up he raced to the goal line for a 7 yard TD. 

He went 6/13 for 75 yards, but ended strong. Woodside has 119 yards on 15/20 passing. 

This is why the fans showed up today, and this is why the Bears took Caleb Williams No. 1 overall. The Bears went three and out on their first three drives before getting on the board with a field goal. Williams final drive gave us a glimpse of what he's capable of. 

Woodside had his team rolling in the early minutes of the second quarter, but was picked off by Ogbongbemiga who made the INT after Blackwell hit the QB on the throw. 

IT'S HALFTIME AND BOTH OFFENSE CAME TO LIFE AT THE END OF THE SECOND QUARTER.

FIELD GOAL!!!

The Bengals are on the board with the final play of the second quarter. McPherson drills the 54 yard field goal to cut into the lead. 

CHI lead 10-3 after 30 minutes from Soldier Field. 

Pass over the middle for Lassiter and he tried to get to the sideline, but was taken down with 9 seconds to go after a 7 yard gain.

Woodside with a couple of completed passes to get into Bears territory with under 30 seconds to go.

Williams takes it all on his own for the 7 yard TD run. He did a little bit of everything on that drive. It didn't start pretty, but that's a great end to the rookies second tune up. 

This is vintage Caleb Williams right here. This is why he was touted to be taken No. 1 for the last few years. That set up the TD just a few plays later. 

Williams rolls right and doesn't see anything down field so he throws it out of bounds.

Williams rolling to the right side and he finds Odunze in the corner of the endzone but the rookie WR had his feet already out of bounds by the time the ball came.

Williams spins out of the pocket, and looks for Odunze up the left sideline and he reels it in for a pick up of 45! What a throw that was from Williams who was moving to his left and threw a dime to the rookie.

Williams escapes the rush, and looks down the left sideline but his deep ball to Everett was a bit behind the TE as he threw that pass off of one foot.

Herbert bounces his run up the middle to the left side and he races towards the sideline for a gain of 21!

Williams finds Webster on the stop route and he turns up field for a gain of 12.

Pass over the middle for Jackson behind the first down marker, but that pass came in too high and tipped off the WR's hands.

The Bears get on the board first with a 37 yard field goal from Santos. The end around from Odunze and the PI flag moved the Bears down the field, but another drive without a TD.

Williams over the middle for Everett but he is dropped after a short gain of 7 yards.

Screen play set up for Blasingame, and he is dropped at the line of scrimmage for no gain.

After a false start backs CHI up 5 yards, the screen pass was sniffed out by the Bengals and Williams had to eat it for a six yard loss.

Collins gets the run to the left side but he's bottled up after a gain of a yard.

Screen pass set up for Williams, but an ineligible receiver downfield is called on CIN which cancels out the 20 yard gain.

Gordon was left all alone on his corner blltz and Woodside didn't see it. He got ROCKED for a loss of 8 yards!

Run to the left side for Collins but he is stopped at the line of scrimmage on first down.

Hudson on the slant underneath and he was wide open to make the short catch and take it 12 yards for the catch and run.

Cincy take over from their 12, and Woodside makes a tough pass on the move to Lassiter, but he caught it in the backfield and was brought down for a loss of three.

Toss play out of the shotgun for Herbert and he carries it to the sideline for a gain of 3 yards.

Williams and the Bears start their drive from the CHI 30 and Herbert gets the handoff up the middle for a gain of one.

After a false start backs the Bengals up to their 31, Woodside's pass over the middle is complete to Hudson, but Owens was there to drag him down after a gain of 4. 

4th and 11 and the Bengals with punt. 

Woodside with the pass to the flat looking for Lassiter, but that pass was deflected and falls incomplete.

Williiams gets another handoff to the right side and he picks up another 4 yards on first down. 

2nd and 6 from the CIN 36. 

Woodside gets out of the pocket and he finds Williams on the sideline to move the chains on the right sideline.

Woodside over the middle to Ali and he drags it in for a gain on 5.

So Burrow starts the game on the bench and it's Woodside getting the nod in the first quarter. 

Williams gets the handoff to the right side and he picks up 2 yards from the CIN 20.

Nice return from Burton but it's coming back after a facemask on Cincy. 

Williams standing in the pocket, but he and his receiver weren't on the same page, and he gets called for an intentional grounding after the pass was no where near anyone.

Williams rolls right and then looks back inside for Everett underneath, but that play was rushed from the start and the pass falls incomplete.

Williams rolls left and throws it quickly to Allen put that throw on the sideline came in too high.

Last year: Bengals

The Bengals weren’t having a great season even with Joe Burrow as the starting QB. They lost three of their first four games as Burrow’s calf continued to bother him. They started to right the ship, winning four straight as Burrow began to look like the QB we all know he can be, but then disaster struck in Week 11 when he injured his wrist and was forced to sit the rest of the season. Jake Browning came in at QB and played pretty well, leading his team to a winning record but what did the Bengals in at the end of the season was their terrible record in the division. They won just one of their six games against AFC North opponents and ended up missing out on the playoffs by one game. 

Last year: Bears

It was a rough year for the Bears, but unfortunately they are used to that in Chicago. The first half of the season was a disaster, they lost their first four games, and seven of their first nine as Matt Eberflus’ job hung in the balance. Justin Fields dealt with injuries all season as he looked to secure his job as the Qb of the future in the Windy City. Even though he returned from injury and played some of his best football the Bears let Fields go to take Williams No. 1. They ended their season 5-3 in the final eight games, and showed fans signs of life, and something to look forward to coming into this year. 

WR options 

Today is going to give us a better indication of who Caleb Williams has grown closest to on the practice field. A rookie quarterback always need a reliable receiver to look for when in doubt, and DJ Moore will be looking to be that guy. There is a deep corp of WRs that Williams is going to have to choose from. Keenan Allen and Rome Oduzie are going to be vying to be his top target, 

Star watch: Bengals 

When Joe Burrow is healthy, he is one of the best quarterbacks in the game. We have seen him carry this team to the Super Bowl while lighting up opposing defenses, but he has been plagued with injury through the first few years of hi career. Back in his rookie year he tore his knee up and missed most of his first season in the NFL. The year after that he took the Bengals to the Super Bowl. Last year he suffered a calf strain in preseason which kept him out of camp, and despite playing at the start of the season, he wasn’t the same QB. Then he tore the ligament in his throwing had in Week 11 against the Ravens last season. The top priority this season will be keeping Burrow healthy. If his O-Line can protect him, this team is a Super Bowl contender.

Star watch: Bears 

Everyone who shows up to Soldier Field today is there for one reason: to watch Caleb Williams. He played two series last week, and might even get more than that today. Coaches and fans alike will want to see how his chemistry is building with his group of wide receivers. In a brief shift against the Bills, Williams showed a skill set that made him the favorite for the top pick in the draft over the last few years. He was comfortable in the pocket, and showed the ability to throw the ball on the run going 4/7 with 95 yards and running for another 13 yards on a single scramble. His longest play was a short pass to D’Andre Swift that the RB broke for a 42 yard catch and run. 

Last game: Bengals

For the first time since November, Joe Burrow was under center for the Cincinnati Bengals after suffering a torn ligament in his wrist. He drove the Bengals down the field and connected with Tee Higgins for a TD on his one and only drive of the game. The Bengals offense would quiet down after the starters came off the field, but Logan Woodside gave Cincy a quick lead with a deep TD pass to Jermaine Burton with 3:30 to go in the 4th quarter. The Bucs would have the last laugh as Ramon Jefferson would cap an eight play drive with a 3 yard TD run with to give Tampa Bay the lead with under a minute to go. 

Last game: Bears  

The top overall draft pick made his Bears debut last week in Buffalo and gave Chicago fans plenty to believe in for the future. Two drives resulted in two field goals for the former USC Trojan. While the focus was on Caleb Williams, it was the run game that made the most noise against the Bills defense. Ian Wheeler led a Bears ground attack that finished the game with 141 yards and three TDs. Wheeler had 43 yards and 2 TDs on five carries in the fourth quarter to secure the 33-6 win. 

We are live from the Windy City 

Hello everyone and welcome to Soldier Field where Bears fans will finally get a look at Caleb Williams up close and personal after Chicago won their first two preseason games. They won a shortened Hall of Fame Game from Canton over the Texans and then crushed the Bills in Buffalo last week, and now they are back home ready to host the Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals. Joe Burrow and the Bengals might have lost in their preseason opener against Tampa Bay, but the good news was their franchise QB was back on the field and looked pretty good in a short stint under center. We are likely to get a better look at him today against a Bears defense that looked much improved in their second game of the preseason.

Week 1 of the regular season is getting closer everyday, but today we have the penultimate tune up for two teams looking to get back into playoffs. It’s been a while since the Bears have been any good in the NFC, but the Bengals are one of the best teams in the AFC when healthy. It’s Cincinnati taking on the Chicago from Soldier Field and AS English will be with you all night providing live coverage, stats, highlights and analysis of today’s afternoon game to kick off a busy preseason Saturday.
