Bengals 31 vs 17 Commanders summary: stats, scores and highlights | NFL Preseason Burrow and Daniels start

The Cincinnati Bengals started Joe Burrow and the rest of the stars for the first quarter against the Commanders and that set the tone for Cincy’s night.

Update:

On the next play from scrimmage Sam Hartman threw an interception to Barrett Carter and Browning wasted no time finding the hot hand. Tinsely made a second straight incredible catch and put the Bengals up 28-14 at half. Cincy would go on to win 31-17 on a night that we saw some stars shine early in the game from Washington.

Jake Browning came into the game after Burrow spent more than a quarter on the field. Browning would take over under center, but Mitchell Tinsley took over the game. He made this spectacular TD grab against his old team, and he wasn't done there.

Burrow was roughed up by the Commanders in his second series and Washington took even less time to score on their next drive. They needed just three snaps, and Bill Croskey-Merritt scampered into the end zone from 27 yards out. The rookie had himself a nice night rushing for 46 yards on 11 carries.

The Commanders marched right down the field and in four plays they were in the end zone. Daniels tucked it and sprinted to the end zone as all of the nation's capital held their breath. It wasn't the smartest of plays for a preseason game, but it was gutsy. It would also be his last play of the night.

Jayden Daniels got his first taste of action and didn't even throw a pass. He took four snaps all runs. The first one went to Deebo Samuel who introduced himself to the Washington fans on Monday night.

The Cincinnati Bengals came out with their big guns in Washington. Joe Burrow, and Ja'Marr Chase started the game but it was a couple of 4th down conversions and a pass interference call that helped get them in position to punch it in with Chase Brown from a yard out.

Hendrickson holdout update

Trey Hendrickson was last year’s sack leader in the NFL despite being on one of the worst defensive teams in the league. His 17.5 sacks were three more than anyone in the NFL, and now he wants to be paid like one of the best pass rushers in the league. Myles Garrett just got a mega contract, now Micah Parsons wants a piece of the pie in Dallas. Hendrickson is the heart and soul of a defense that doesn’t have a whole lot of bite. He knows they need him, and he is holding out for as much money as possible. Rumor out of Cincy is there are teams lining up to trade for the sack leader, the question is will the Bengals want to let him go? Pay him? Or wait for one more year before his contract run out.

McLaurin holdout update

The good news is Terry McLaurin has been taken off the PUP list for the Washington Commanders. The bad news is there is still no process in the contract negotiations between he and Washington. He was without question the top target for Daniels last year, catching 82 balls for 1,096 yards and 13 TDs. Now, he is in the final year of his contract, and he’s set to make $24,100,000 this year. Looking across the field, he’ll see Ja’Marr Chase who just signed a new contract worth over $40,000,000 a year. McLaurin may not be considered one of the best WRs in the league, but he knows his value, especially to second year QB Jayden Daniels and this Commanders offense.

Commanders star watch

Rookie seasons are tough. Jayden Daniels’ year was not normal. He went for 3,568 yards, 25 TDs and 9 INTs in his first season, and now he’s got another year of experience under his belt and a few new weapons at his disposal. HIs main target from last year, Terry McLaurin, is in the midst of a holdout until he gets a new deal so that could be a big hit to the offense and to Daniels should a deal not get worked out. There is such a thing as a sophomore slump, but the Commanders will be looking to make life easy for Daniels in his second season.

Benglas star watch

We aren’t going to get much of a look at Joe Burrow, or Ja’Marr Chase or Tee Higgins but even getting a little glimpse of them will open the door to some first quarter fireworks in Washington tonight. In two drives Burrow went for 123 yards on 9/10 passing with two TDs. Chase caught one of those TDs and caught 4 passes for 77 yards. Ja’Marr is coming off of a triple crown winning season, and despite his slow start, Joe Burrow might have had the best season of his young, but spectacular career. Tonight we should get another preview of what’s to come this season.

Bengals last season

The Bengals got off to a horrible start last season, losing their fist three and four of their first five. Ja’Marr Chase held out which got him off to a slow start, which meant Joe Burrow who was battling injury got off to a slow start and the defense couldn’t stop a nose bleed for most of the year. They were 4-8 with five weeks to go, but rallied to win their final five games. In the end their slow start did them in and they were knocked out of the playoff picture for the second straght year following their run to the Super Bowl. This year they are going to rely heavily on their offense to carry the load with some departures in the offseason and a tricky contract dispute with their best pass rusher.

Commanders last game

There was no Jayden McDaniels or Deebo Samuel last game for the Commanders and the Patriots exploited that from the start. They returned the opening kickoff of the game back for a touchdown and then missed a field goal after a Drake Maye fumble in the first quarter. They went down 17-0 heading into the second quarter and the Commanders struggled to get back into the game with Josh Johnson and Sam Hartman in at QB. Johnson got most of the snaps, going 15/22 for 173 yards and 1 TD with 1 INT but most of the point didn’t come until the second half and by that time the Pats were already up 27-3. They would go on to win 48-18.

Bengals last game

The Bengals went to Philly last week and there were plenty of fireworks to go around at Lincoln Financial Stadium. Joe Burrow and the starters for a few series and came out and scored back to back touchdowns before calling it a day. The defense played a few series and struggled to slow down the second team guys from the Eagles. Things settled down in the second half, but it was a Jake Browning interception that allowed the Eagles to stretch the lead out to 34-17, and that was enough to take the opening preseason game. The Bengals showed us their offense should be just fine, but the defense is going to need a lot of tuning up before the start of the season.

We are live from the nation’s capital

Hello everyone and welcome Northwest Stadium where the Commanders will be looking to improved on an incredible turnaround season last year. They have a second year QB who is a year wiser and a year more mature. They have a coach that came in and changed the culture immediately. And they have a fan base that finally has a team to believe in for the first time in a long time. The Bengals have invested big money in their offense as Joe Burrow’s favorite weapons signed contract extensions but their defense, which was suspect last year, may be even more vulnerable this season. The Bengals played their starters last week for a few series, and they will do the same tonight in Washington. The Commanders didn’t play their top guys last week, but it seems as though the first teamers will play tonight against the Commanders.
