Big plays “second nature” to 49ers star Deebo Samuel

If 49ers running back Deebo Samuel gets the ball in his hands, chances are a big play is coming.

The 49ers superstar running back Deebo Samuel is not one of those players who catches the ball and then just falls over, or catches the ball and gets you three to five yards. Nope, Deebo Samuel is known for what he does after the catch because it is magic.

On Monday, Samuel showed off just that. In the 49ers 24-9 victory over the defending Super Bowl champions, the Los Angeles Rams, Samuel caught six passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. 105 of those 115 yards came after the catch, and 52 of those came on the touchdown run.

“You get the ball in his hands, and I think he’s shown he does pretty cool things,” said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Correct. In the second half of the game, Samuel added another 40 yards after the catch on two of his receptions. On the touchdown, he was given the space to make the play, and make the play he did, dodging Jauan Jennings, then using his speed and explosiveness to get down the field and past Jalen Ramsey’s futile tackle attempt.

“Every time I get a chance to get the ball in my hands, that’s just my mentality of trying to make it a big play,” said Samuel. “But it’s just second nature to me right now.”
