The New England Patriots were the first team to fill the head coaching vacancy they had heading into the 2025 NFL season. The choice to replace Jerod Mayo was Mike Vrabel, who spent eight years as a player for the franchise and won three Super Bowls under the watchful eye of Bill Belichick. The latter believes that the former Tennessee Titans head coach has what it takes to make the Pats a competitive team again under the new administration.

The six-time Vince Lombardi Trophy winner with the Patriots appeared on Monday’s episode of the Pat McAfee Show and said he is confident Vrabel will do a great job because he prepares his teams well to compete every day.

I think Mike has done a great job, so it wasn’t a surprise. I coached him in New England, I talked to him when he was at Ohio State. We stayed in touch,” said the North Carolina head coach. “I have a lot of respect for him and I think he does a great job. He prepares his teams well, they are tough, competitive, and smart like he was when he was a player. […] I love Mike, and I know he will do a great job.

Vrabel was presented on Monday as the 16th head coach in Patriots history. During his six-season stint as Tennessee’s head coach, he posted a 54-45 regular season record and 2-3 playoff record. In 2021, he led the Titans to the top seed in the AFC, earning him Coach of the Year honors.

Mike Vrabel ended the Brady-Belichick era in New England

Curiously, Vrabel was the one who ended the most successful stage in the New England franchise’s history. The Tom Brady-Bill Belichick duo’s last game was a loss in the 2019 Wild Card Round.

The last time Brady threw a pass as a Patriots player, it ended in a defensive touchdown. The quarterback looked for Mohamed Sanu, but Logan Ryan, the Titans’ cornerback at the time and his teammate from 2013 to 2016, took him to the end zone.
