After nine years at the helm, the Buffalo Bills have decided to part company with head coach Sean McDermott. Not everyone in Buffalo has taken the news well.

In announcing the decision team owner Terry Pegula issued a statement thanking McDermott for the “admirable job” he had done in leading the team, adding: “But I feel we are in need of a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level.”

During his time in charge McDermott had transformed the Bills from one of the league’s worst teams to a genuine AFC contenders, winning five straight AFC East titles from 2020 to 2024. After the decision to sack McDermott was announced, Bills players reacted in belief.

Given his success with the Bills, many in the team were stunned by McDermott’s sudden departure. Defensive tackle Jordan Phillips is currently in his third stint with the Bills and he spoke out against the decision on social media.

Writing on his Instagram story, Phillips said: “This shit here is so stupid honestly sickening. The best coach I’ve ever been around.”

He was not the only one in disbelief. Defensive end Shaq Lawson wrote: “Damn shit don’t make sense. He changed the whole culture.”

Likewise, defensive tackle DaQuan Jones seemed to take aim at Bills fans who wanted McDermott to be replaced. He said: “Don’t make sense but ya got what ya wanted.”
