Brock Purdy contract details: What is his salary and how many years does he have left?
The NFL’s ‘Mr Irrelevant’ from 2022 has enjoyed a meteoric rise but he is still one of the lowest-paid quarterbacks in the league.
After leading the team to Super Bowl LVIII, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy can claim to be one of the most consistent and reliable in his position across the 2023 NFL season.
But while he’s made a positive impression, Purdy hasn’t made very much money. Not yet, at least.
Brock Purdy was the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft when he was signed by the San Francisco 49ers, earning himself the unenviable title of ‘Mr Irrelevant’. The Iowa State graduate has gone on to exceed all expectations but is still tied to the four-year rookie contract he signed in 2022.
Bruck Purdy’s San Francisco 49ers contract breakdown
Despite a very impressive 2023 season - leading the entire league for passer ratings - Purdy’s salary remains far lower than is typical for a starting QB. Purdy is on the same four-year, $3.7 million contract that he first signed.
The contract came with $77,008 in guaranteed money and carries an average annual value (AAV) of $934,252. After leading his team to the Super Bowl, Purdy earned a base salary of $870,000 in 2023. Here’s how the contract looks across the course of the next two years...
Year | Base Salary | Bonuses | Cap Hit | Dead Cap |
---|---|---|---|---|
2023 | $870,000 | $19,252 | $889,252 | $57,756 |
2024 | $985,000 | $19,252 | $1,004,252 | $38,504 |
2025 | $1,100,000 | $19,252 | $1,119,252 | $19,252 |
In essence, Purdy’s deal is so cheap is because of his NFL Draft position. As the very last player in the 2022 Draft, he wasn’t exactly entering the league in a position of power with rookie contracts based on the draft spot. At No. 262, he was literally at the bottom of the pile.
But it’s not all bad news for Purdy. His low salary has allowed the 49ers to build a superstar offence, one of the most versatile in the league. With such a variety of runners at his disposal Purdy has flourished in NFL and now looks set to bag a bumper deal of his own.
How much could Brock Purdy’s new contract be worth?
Last season Purdy finished fourth in the voting for NFL Most Valuable Player. Yet within his own locker room he’s the 41st-highest earner. Obviously that situation is bound to change and developments elsewhere in the league mean that the 24-year-old is set for a huge payday.
Last Sunday Dak Prescot signed a four-year, $240 million contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys. That $60 million-per-year deal makes him the highest-paid player in league history, setting Purdy up for something similar.
NBC Bay Area reports that Purdy will use Prescott’s deal as a benchmark for his own multi-year contract extension. Shifting from one of the league’s cheapest QBs to one of the most expensive will undoubtedly have an impact on the 49ers’ finances but they should be able to manage a bumper deal. Ahead of the 2024 season, San Francisco had a league-high $55 million in cap space. It’s only right that some of it should go to Purdy, the one-time Mr Irrelevant.
