Buccaneers 9 vs 24 Lions summary, stats, score and highlights | NFL Week 7

The Lions secondary doesn't have a single starter from Week 1 that is healthy but the second and third string guys buckled down and shut down one of the best offenses in the league. Mayfield was frustrated all night going for 228 yards on 28/50 passing with 1 TD and 1 INT. 

The Lions improve to 5-2 and win another game after taking a loss the previous week. They haven't lost 2 in a row since October of 2022. They have the Saints next week and then will have their BYE. The Bucs go into their BYE with a bad taste in their mouth, but they are 5-2 and still have one of the best records in the league. This could have been a preview of a game we will see sometime in January. 

The Lions would stretch the lead to 15 with a 50+ yard field goal from Jake Bates, and they would let their defense do the rest. 

The Lions would punch back with another Jahmyr Gibbs TD. He had a career high 212 total yards on MOnday night. He had 136 on the ground and 86 in the air against the stubborn Bucs defense. 

On the other side of halftime Mayfield found Tez Johnson who made a brilliant individual play to get into the end zone and cut the lead to five after the failed two point conversion. 

Goff threw his third INT of the season, and this one was picked off by Jamel Dean late in the first half. The Bucs were able to put points on the board after Baker Mayfield finally moved the ball over the 50, and set up a field goal to end the half. 

On the next snap for the Bucs, Otton had the ball ripped out of his hands and the one time catch was ruled an interception for Arthur Maulet. The Lions weren't able to do anything after a second successive TO thanks to another stand from the TB defense. 

It got sloppy for the Lions at the end of the first half, but their defense was able to keep them in the game. This punch out fumble forced by Amik Robertson was recovered by Aidan Hutchinson, but the Lions missed the field goal just a few plays later. 

The Lons dominated the game early on, gaining 160 yards in the first quarter, but a fumble and a turnover on downs kept the score at 7-0. The Bucs got blanked in the first half, and had just 40 yards of offense in the first 29 minutes of the game. Gibbs broke one mid way through the second quarter and took it 78 yards to the house to double the Lions lead. 

The Lions were driving again, but the Bucs defense strip sacked Jared Goff to keep points off the board early in the 1st quarter. 

The Detroit Lions welcomed the one loss Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a Monday Night matchup from Ford Field and it wasn't either offense taking the cake in primetime, it was the banged up Detroit defense. 

The Lions did come out swinging early on with a mix of Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown, and it was the WR who put the first points on the scoreboard with this 27 yard TD catch and run. 

Montgomery gets a yard on the run to the left side.

WE ARE BACK IN DETROIT FOR THE SECOND HALF OF ACTION!

Goff was picked off by Jamel Dean to give the Bucs a shot of life before the half and it was Baker putting TB in FG position right before the halftime break. 

The Lions missed a field goal, and the Bucs got the ball back, but Otton had the ball ripped out of his hands by Arthur Maulet on the first Bucs snap following the fumble. 

Things went from bad to worse for the Bucs offense who had 40 yards of total offense until the final minute of the first half. Amik Roberton punched the ball out of Shepard's hands and Hutchinson jumped on the ball. 

The Lions had 160 yards in the first quarter, but thing settled down for a while as the Bucs defense buckled down. That all changed after the Bucs were flagged for an illegal contact penalty on 3rd down, and on the next play Gibbs took it 78 yards for a TD. He's got 107 yards rushing and 54 yards receiving. 

The Lions were driving again, but the Bucs defense came up big with this strip sack from Diaby to kill the drive for Detroit. 

The Lions marched right down the field on the first possession of the game and Goff hit St. Brown with a 27 yard TD pass. It looked like there were going to be fireworks at the start of the game but it turned into a turnover fest.

Lions ground game 

The Lions have one of the best, if not the best ground attacks in the league. Last year the passing game facilitated the running game, but this year it’s been Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery leading the was. Gibbs has 390 yards on the ground and four TDs, while David Montgomery has another 334 yards. On top of that Gibbs has another 112 yards and a TD through the air. 

Will the real MVP please stand up?

I’m not sure who else in the league could make the case that Baker Mayfield can for the MVP of the first six weeks of the campaign. He has been sensational. He has been a leader, and on top of that he has been heroic with his late game winning drives that have helped the Bucs to their 5-1 start. He’s currently the second favorite in the MVP odds leader board, with MGM Grande currently putting his odds at +325. Patrick Mahomes is the only QB above him after seeing the Chiefs offense revitalized with the return of Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy. There is a long way to go, but if Baker keeps this up it will be hard to give the award to anyone else. 

Lions after a loss 

The Lions have made a habit of bouncing back in a big way after losses in the last couple of seasons. This year they lost their opener to the Green Bay Packers and then rattled off four straight wins. Last year they lost in Week 2 against the Bucs and then rebounded to win their next 11 games. They lost again in  Week 15, but finished the season with three straight wins. They haven’t lost back to back games since October of 2022, and that was Dan Campbell’s second season on the job. Since then they have been unbeatable in the game after losses and tonight they will put that to the test against a Bucs team that is going to be looking to move to 6-1 on the season.

The Lions are led by their gun slinging QB Jared Goff who over the years has turned into one of the best passers in the game. Last year we saw him lighting up defenses through the air, but this year he has had just one 300 yard game. That came against the Bears in his 5 TD game, but where he has set himself apart is his accuracy. He is completing 75.9% of his passes which is tops in the league. He has passed for 1,390 yards and tossed 14 TDs with just 2 interceptions. Tonight he’s going to needs to be both accurate and explosive in the air if he’s going to beat this tough Tampa team who are relentless until the last second. 

Bucs star watch 

Baker Mayfield might be the best quarterback in the world right now. He’s at least playing like the best QB in the world this season, and tonight he will be put to the test again. The gunslinger who was written off by the Cleveland Browns and the Carolina Panthers to a second shot at life in Tampa Bay and became one of the best players in the league. This year, he’s got 1,539 yards with 12 TDs and just one INT. It’s not just the stats or the wins, but it’s the plays in the biggest moments of the game that he makes that makes him one of the most impactful players in the league on what up until now has looked like the best team in the NFC. 

Lions last game 

The Lions went into Kansas City for a Sunday night match up and got shut down by the Chiefs defense. The first drive ended in a TD that was taken back for an illegal formation, and the Lions had to settle for a field goal. Jared Goff tossed a TD to Jameson Williams, but Patrick Mahomes threw for a TD and rushed for another to put the Chiefs up 13-10 at half. The Chiefs would extend their lead to 20-10 on a Mahomes pass to Hollywood Brown but Goff and the Lions battled back. Goff hit Sam La Porta with a TD pass to cut the lead to 20-17 at the beginning of the final quarter. Mahomes and the Chiefs would answer back with a second TD catch from Brown and Harrison Butker sealed the game with a field goal with just over 2:00 to go. 

Bucs last game 

Last week the Bucs hosted the 49ers in a battle of one loss teams. It was Mac Jones against Baker Mayfield and both quarterbacks had monster games. Tampa Bay went to the halftime break up 20-16 after an early interception on Mac Jones set up Rachaad White’s 2 yard TD run, and a Sean White TD and Mayfield TD pass to Kameron Johnson. Tampa Bay’s defense locked down in the second half, allowing a first drive FG for San Fran and that was all. Meanwhile Mayfield hit Tez Johnson with a 45 yard TD bomb on the next drive to put the Bucs up 27-19. With the game still up in the air, and the Bucs facing a late 3rd and long, but Baker Mayfield put on his super hero cape and picked up a miraculous first down to extend the drive. The Bucs would kick a field goal with under 2:00 to go and close out the game to move to 5-1.

Hello everyone and welcome to the Motor City where the Lions are back home looking to bounce back from a Monday night loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. They have been nearly unbeatable in the game after losses but tonight they face a tough test against one of the top teams in the league. Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Bucs have been the most entertaining team in the league without a question, with most of their wins coming on last minute drives led by their MVP candidate QB.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the top record in the NFC and tonight they travel to Detroit for a Monday Night showdown with the Lions.
