Buccaneers 20 vs 19 Texans summary, Mayfield lead late heroics, stats, scores and highlights | NFL Week 2 2025

With a couple timeouts left, the Bucs decided to run it from the two yard line and it was Rachaad White that punched in the game winning TD with 6 seconds left. Irving ended the night with 71 yards on 17 carries and White had 65 on 10 carries, none bigger than the game winner.

The Bucs improve to 2-0 after two tough road games while the Texans drop to 0-2. Just 12% of teams end up making the playoff after an 0-2 start. Houston might have a problem just two weeks into the season. 

Irving didn't just do it on the ground, he had a massive pick up on a screen pass that put the Bucs within striking distance with just over a half minute to go. 

Mayfield and the offense got the ball back with just over 2:00 to go, and they calmly move the ball down the field. For the second straight week the Bucs needed a TD late and they got one thanks to Bucky Irving and Baker. Mayfield tucked it on 4th and long and did his best Bucky impression to keep his team in the game. 

Nick Chubb had 43 yards on the ground all game, but he got 25 of those on this TD run that put the Texans in the lead right before the two minute warning. 

The defense came up with another stop and the Houston special teams made another massive play to set up the offense with great field position. Jaylin Noel put Houston at the TB 26 to give them a chance to take the lead with 3:00 to go. 

The Houston offense shut off after the first quarter. They got down to the TB 1 yard line but here held on three straight plays and turned it over on downs and remained down by four in the final quarter. The special teams had to come in and save the day, blocking a punt to set up the Texans with excellent field position. The Texans couldn't do much with it, and had to settle for a field goal to cut the lead to one. 

Both teams scored on their first two possessions of the night, but it was the Bucs who took the lead after holding the Texans to a FG. They would go ahead on this WR screen to Emeka Egbuka who registered his 3rd TD in his second NFL game. 

The game got started off to a feverish pace, but it was the defenses that stepped up for the rest of the way. 

Baker Mayfield and the Bucs answered right back a TD drive of their own to start the night. Mayfield hit Ryan Miller with a 20 yard dime to tie the game up at 7-7. 

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went into Houston and were decimated by injuries against the Texans, but Baker Mayfield led his team to a late win for the second straight week. Mayfield had 215 yards and two TDs to lift he Bucs to 2-0 while Houston dropped to 0-2. 

The Texans came out firing after not scoring a single TD in their season opener against the Rams. CJ Stroud led his guys down field in just six plays and the Texans were in the end zone just three minutes into the game. Stroud hit Nico Collins in the end zone and the first quarter got started with a bang.

Smith brought it out and that took up all the time off the clock as he was tackled around the 35!

Mayfield was eaten up by the defense but got rid of it and that pass fell incomplete and the two point conversion is unsuccessful.

Mayfield finds Irving over the middle and he makes a move, then breaks a tackle and takes it for 22 yards and a first down! 

1st and 10 from the HOU 23 and the Bucs take their first TO of the game with 42 seconds to go. 

Mayfield finds Otton on the right sideline and he gets out of bounds after an 8 yard gain. 

2nd and 2 from the HOU 45 with 52 seconds to go. 

Mayfield steps up the the pocket and he takes it for 15 yards fo a 1st down to keep TB alive!

Mayfield rolls right and throws a strike to Egbuka but the rookie WR couldn't reel in the catch that hit him in the hands.

Chubb gained more yards on this run than he had all night. It came at the perfect time for HOU who lead by 5 with 2:00 to go. 

The special teams comes up big again after blocking a punt leading to a FG, and then Noel put HOU in great position after this 53 yard return. 

Chubb gets the handoff up the middle and he picks up a yard on first down.

Noel gets the punt on the right sideline and takes it all the way across field and he takes it for 53 yards down to the TB 26!

This game got off to a feverish pace with both teams putting points on the board early, but ever since this Egbuka WR screen turned TD, the defenses have taken over.

The Bucs answered back thanks to a great drive from Mayfield and the offense. He hit Ryan Miller open in the end zone to tie the game up. 

The Texans started the game hot after not scoring at all in the first game. They came out and hit pay dirt with a Stroud pass to Collins for the opening score of the night. Stroud has 131 yards and a TD on 8/13 passing.

WE ARE UNDERWAY FROM HOUSTON!!!

The first of two Monday Night Kickoffs

This is just the first game of the NFL season’s first Monday Night doubleheader. Later on tonight we have the Los Angeles Chargers and the Las Vegas Raiders kicking off from Sin City. This is one of four Monday Night Doubleheaders we have coming our way this season. The next one will be in Week 4, then in Week 6 and 7 and finally in Week 18. 

Scary stat for 0-2 teams

It’s much too early to panic just two weeks into the season. Or is it? The Kansas City Chiefs just dropped to 0-2 last night in KC and now he Texans are up against the ropes hoping to avoid starting that season digging themselves into that same hole. Historically teams that start the season with an 0-2 defict have a 12% chance of making the playoffs. 

NFC South preview 

The NFC South has been one of the worst divisions in football for the last few years. The Bucs have won the division four straight years but it’s more about the lack of competition than it is about the Bucs being a dominant force in the NFC. Tampa is the favorite, but it looks to be a two horse race with Atlanta. Carolina and New Orleans will need nothing short of a miracle to even be considered in the division race come December, and the Bucs got a big win o the road over the Falcons to start the season. 

AFC South preview 

The Houston Texans have won the AFC South two years running. Since CJ Stroud and DeMeco Ryans came to town they have swept the division, but this year might be a little different. The Indianapolis Colts look like legit contenders in the division and the Jags might make a run if they can sort out some things that have plagued them. The Texans aren’t going to have it easy this year, especially if they lose this game tonight and drop to 0-2. 

Running back match up

While we always tend to focus on the quarterbacks in the star watch portion of the preview, the running backs will be key to success tonight for both teams. Joe Mixon is the primary running back in Houston but he will be out for the first four weeks of the season, at least. That opens the door for Nick Chubb who was with the Browns for the last seven years but injuries plagued him over the last couple seasons. He made his Texans debut last week rushing for 60 yards on 13 carries, and will likely be more incorporated in the offense tonight. No the other side of the ball, Bucky Irving is coming into his second season in the league. He had a great rookie season, rushing for 1,122 yada and 8 TDs but last week he had just 37 yards on 14 carries. 

Star watch: Texans

C.J. Stroud is entering his third year in Houston. His rookie year was one of the best we have ever seen from a first year QB, but that set expectations high in Houston and last year it proved to be a difficult task to follow up in year two. Houston built a team of stars around him to facilitate the sophomore season, but injuries to the WR corps didn’t help him out. He threw for 3,727 yards 20 TDs and 12 INTs. Not bad numbers but it was a dip in yards TDs, and a raise in INTs. He ended up leading Houston to the playoffs but they were knocked out Chiefs in the Divisional Round. 

Star watch: Bucs  

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers seemed to have revived the career of Baker Mayfield. He was taken with the No. 1 overall pick back in 2018 but the fans turned on him and the franchise eventually got rid of him. A few games with the Carolina Panthers went terribly and he was shipped to LA to play with the Rams for a couple of games. He signed with the Bucs in 2023 and since then he’s had 4,000 yard seasons and had his best year last campaign tossing fo 4,500 yards, 41 TDs and 16 INTs. His offensive coordinator from the last couple years is now coaching in Jacksonville, and he’s in a new system which will take some time to get used to. He completed just one 50% of his passes last week and threw for just 167 yards, but had 3 TDs and delivered when it mattered most. 

Last game: Texans

Houston had a miserable start to the season in LA. They didn’t score a single touchdown in the game against the Rams, and while the Rams didn’t put up a whole lot of points, their two TDs on both sides of the were enough to down the Texans. Kyren Williams ran in a one yard TD to cut the lead to 9-7 and then Matthew Stafford hit Davis Allen on the other side of the halftime break to take a 14-9 lead. The defense locked down from there and kept Houston off the board for the rest of the way. Houston was knocking on the door with under 2:00 to go, but a fumble on the LA 18 with 1:51 to go sealed the game for the Rams as the Texans dropped to 0-1.

It was a division game on the road against a team that is expected to be with locked with them in a NFC South race until the very end. Baker Mayfield and the Bucs went into Atlanta and pulled out a close win late in the 4th quarter, thanks to some final minute heroics and a missed field goal by Atlanta as time wound down. Baker Mayfield threw for three touchdowns including a 25 yard pass to Emeka Egbuka with under a minute left to put the Bucs up by three. Chase McLaughlin missed the PAT, which would have forced the Falcons to score a TD to win he game but Atlanta had a chance to tie it up with a 44 yard field goal but Younghoe Kim missed the field goal ride right and the Bucs held on for a crucial early season win.

Hello everyone and welcome to Houston where the Texans are looking for their first win of the season after laying a dud in last week in Los Angeles. The Texans came into this season as the favorites to win the AFC South again, but the first two weeks of the season have proven that they aren’t going to coast to an AFC South title for a third straight year. The Texans host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who won their opener over a division rival and they hit the road tonight looking to move to 2-0 to start the season. Both of these teams expect to be in the playoff picture, but the Texans need to turn things around tonight if they want to avoid a winless start to the campaign.
