The NFL is in mourning following the sudden death of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin. The team confirmed the news in a statement on Sunday, expressing shock and sadness over the passing of one of the franchise’s most beloved players. Martin was 36.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin,” the Buccaneers said in a statement. “From his record-breaking rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections over six years with the Buccaneers, Doug made a lasting impact on our organization. He was a fan favorite during his time in Tampa Bay and was honored as one of the Top 50 Buccaneers of all time for his many achievements.”

Mystery surrounds Martin’s cause of death

In a separate statement, Martin’s family said: “It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”

According to the East Bay Times, Martin died while in police custody. Their report claims the former NFL star was involved in a “brief struggle” with police, who were responding to a reported home break-in in East Oakland just after 4 a.m. on Saturday morning.

“Officers responded to the area for an individual who had broken into a nearby residence,” Oakland Police Department explained. “Simultaneously, officers were notified of an individual who was experiencing a medical emergency and was believed to be the same individual related to the break-in.

“Upon arrival, officers located the individual inside the residence. While attempting to detain the individual, a brief struggle ensued. After being taken into custody, the individual became unresponsive.

“Paramedic personnel arrived, provided medical aid, and transported the individual to an area hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately, the individual later died at the hospital.”

Doug Martin’s lasting impact in Tampa Bay

A first-round pick out of Boise State in the 2012 NFL Draft, Martin made an immediate impression in his debut season. He rushed for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns, adding 472 receiving yards, earning a Pro Bowl selection and widespread recognition as one of the league’s most exciting young backs.

When healthy, Martin was one of the NFL’s most dynamic runners. In 2015, he was named a First-Team All-Pro after rushing for 1,402 yards and adding 271 through the air. His combination of power and agility made him a cornerstone of Tampa Bay’s offense during his prime years.

Although his career in Tampa Bay lasted just six seasons, Martin’s impact endured. He was later ranked the 44th greatest player in franchise history, cementing his place among the Buccaneers’ all-time elite.
