Buffalo Bills 16 vs 22 New York Jets summary, stats, scores and highlights | NFL Week 1
The New York Jets battled back to take an opening week win in dramatic fashion as rookie Xavier Gipson ran back a 65 yard game winning touchdown to seal the deal from MetLife, but that was the secondary story in the Meadowlands on Monday night. Aaron Rodgers went down early with a lower leg injury, and many in New York are fearing the worst after the 22-16 win.
Disaster strikes early for Jets
The buzz in New York was electric as Aaron Rodgers was set to make his Jets debut on the 22nd anniversary of 9/11. He took the American flag out of the tunnel as he was introduced for the first time to the Jets fans in Meadowlands, but the stadium was silenced on New York’s fourth offensive play of the game as Rodgers went down with a lower leg injury.
He was helped off the field and then carted to the locker room with a boot on his leg before being ruled out of the rest of the game. The initial though was a potential ankle injury, but there are tremors around New York that it could be an achilles injury which would be much more serious. The Jets fans and players seemed stunned as all of the hype and excitement disappeared in an instant and Robert Saleh told reporters after the game that “it doesn’t look good,” when asked about the status of Rodgers’ injury.
Zach Wilson came in to the game after Rodgers went to the locker room, and the Jets offense sputtered for most of the game, but the defense was heroic in a night that the Jets had to fight off the devastation of potentially losing their QB1 for the foreseeable future.
Allen's rough night
Josh Allen and Buffalo weren’t able to unlock the Jets defense, despite going up 10-3 thanks to second quarter touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs. That would be the only bright spot of the Bills opener as Allen went on to throw three interceptions, all picked off by Jordan Whitehead.
Thanks to Whitehead’s third interception of the night, the Jets got great field position which led to their only offensive touchdown of the game. Wilson found up and coming superstar Garrett Wilson who made a one handed snag in the end zone to tie the game up at 13-13 with under five minutes to play.
On the next play from scrimmage Josh Allen fumbled the ball, giving away his fourth turnover of the game, and the Jets took the lead with a Greg Zuerlein chip shot from 30 yards out with 1:48 to play.
Rookie Gipson the hero
That was enough time for Allen to hit Diggs on three of his four completions on the final drive of regulation and set up a 50 yard Tyler Bass field goal that banged off the left goal post and through the uprights to tie the game at 16-16 with two seconds on the clock.
The Bills won the toss in overtime, but went three and out on their first drive, and on the ensuing punt rookie Xavier Gipson took it 65 yards to the house for the walkoff winner to give the Jets an emotional Week 1 win.
This will be a bittersweet win for the Jets who know their season rides on the test results of Aaron Rodgers lower left leg.
After an emotional win, Robert Saleh told reporters "it's not good" referring to Aaron Rodgers, as the Jets fear the four time MVP might have torn his achilles.

After the Bills tied the game up with a 50 yard field goal that hit off the left post and went through the uprights, they won the toss but went three and out and it was the rookie Xavier Gipson who took it 65 yards to the house for the walkoff winner.

One play after the Wilson TD catch, Allen fumbled the ball, committing his fourth turnover of the game which allowed the Jets to take the lead with a Greg Zuerlein field goal with under 2:00 to go.
Cargando...
Wilson came in for Rodgers right off the bat and struggled for much of the night, but when it mattered most he went to the Jets' go to receiver Garrett Wilson who made this unbelievable catch to tie the game up with under 5:00 to go.
Cargando...
Not one, not two, but three INTs for Jordan Whitehead who changed the game and put the Jets in a position to score their first TD of the game.
Cargando...
With Rodgers out, the Jets' defense knew they were going to have to step up if NY was going to win this game, and Whitehead took it upon his shoulders to keep his team in the game.
Cargando...
Jordan Whitehead had himself a night he will never forget, starting with this early interception on Allen to start the second quarter.
Cargando...
It wasn't all bad news to start the game for the Jets. They got Breece Hall back after tearing his ACL last year, and for most of the game he was the only ray of light in an otherwise dull offensive night for the Jets. He had 127 yards on 10 carries in his return.
Cargando...
These two had their spats at the end of last season, and into the offseason, but Stefon Diggs and Josh Allen hooked up for the first TD of the Bills season. That would be one of the final bright moments for Josh Allen and this offense.
Cargando...
The Jets may have won in dramatic fashion to start their season off on the right foot, but it will be a bittersweet victory after seeing Aaron Rodgers go down on New York's fourth offensive snap of the game. It was a lower leg injury, but we don't know much more other than that.
Cargando...
Are you kidding me with this ending? The rookie Gipson takes it to the house on a walk off winner from New York!

Hamlin back with the Bills, but won’t return tonight
Bills safety Damar Hamlin is expected to be inactive for tonight’s game against the Jets. The fact that he had the possibility to play in the season opener after his heart stopped in Cincinnati during the Bills Bengals game in early January is just another miracle to add to the list of miracles that got us to this point. It was the NFL’s most frightful moment. Hamlin made a hit on a Bengals receiver, got up and then collapses on the ground as tears ran down players’ faces and medical staff rushed to his aid. After what seemed like an eternity, an ambulance finally took Hamlin off the field, but no one knew if he was going to survive the scare or not. After weeks in the hospital he was released, after months of rehab he was given the green light to start training again, and after 253 days Damar Hamlin is back with the Bills and should be ready to play in the coming weeks.

Diggs dust up in Buffalo?
It was one of the images of the playoffs, and one that surely shook Bills Mafia going into the offseason. In their playoff loss to Cincinnati, Stefon Diggs was seen challenging Josh Allen after the offense failed to impress during the Divisional Round. Rumors of an inter-locker room spat began to circle around Orchard Park, and while Josh Allen has dismissed those rumors since, there are some who say the fire has not been extinguished. Some time the best thing to do is to get back on the field and start winning games. Unfortunately for the Bills it took more than seven months to get back on the field. Tonight they will try to show that the hatchet has been buried, as the duo get back to doing what they do best.

Rodgers living it up in NYC
Not since Broadway Joe has a player brought this much excitement to the Green and White part of New York. The city is buzzing to get their first real look at Aaron Rodgers, and it seems like he has been buzzing with excitement to live somewhere other than Green Bay for the first time in two decades. He has been to NBA games, NHL games, Taylor Swift concerts and enjoying everything that the City That Never Sleeps has to offer. Now it’s time for the four time MVP to repay the city by taking the Jets to a place they haven’t been since Super Bowl III in 1968.

Rodgers Jets debut
All the hype may be surrounding Aaron Rodgers, but the truth is, this Jets team is ready to win and they are ready to win now. We saw what they are capable even without the four time MVP last year. They were contending for the AFC East title through the first half of the season, and even though the defense continued to contain teams, the offense scored just more than 20 points just once in the final six games of the season, including just total 15 points in the final three games. This year that won’t be a problem with one of the best quarterbacks of this generation under center.

The Jets had the unfortunate circumstance of being stuck in the best division in football last year. They started the year losing two of their first three as their then starting QB, Zach Wilson, watched from the sideline waiting to recover from injury. Once Wilson got healthy, the Jets won six of seven games, but they had one of the most historic collapses ever, losing seven of their last eight following a locker room blowup in which Zach Wilson brushed off suggestions that he and the offense let the defense and the team down in a 10-3 loss to New England in Week 11.

Bills open season on the road
Is the Bills championship window closing? That’s the big question coming into this season. There are only so many seasons you can be one of the favorites to win it all before that team breaks apart as a result of lack of success. Those in Buffalo know as long as Josh Allen is the quarterback in Orchard Park, the Bills will have a chance but Bills Mafia knows what it’s like to have a team capable of winning the Super Bowl and to let that chance slip. It’s been more than three decades since Jim Kelly and the Bills went to the Super Bowl four straight year, losing all four and I doubt those in Western Buffalo are too eager to wait another three decades before another team capable of winning a championship comes along.

Bills last year
With Josh Allen as their quarterback, an offense stacked full of weapons and a revamped defense, the Bills were all the buzz in the AFC to start the season. They won six of their first seven games while averaging almost 30 points a game, but there was a minor slip up which lead to a two game skid to the Jets and Vikings. They rebounded, winning their final seven games of the season, which earned them the AFC East Title. They got past divisional rivals Miami in the Wild Card round of the playoffs, but were then manhandled by the Cincinnati Bengals in Divisional round and once again the Bills were left watching Super Bowl Sunday from home.
