Update:

The Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears got a test run against each other on Friday at Halas Hall, and the storyline that grabbed attention was the turnover tally between quarterbacks.

Josh Allen’s 3 picks reason for Bills fans to panic?

Josh Allen, Buffalo’s star quarterback and former MVP, threw three interceptions during the joint session. Chicago rookie Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in 2024, managed to avoid being picked off. On paper, that looks like a win for the Bears.

But dig deeper, and the picture looks a little different.

Allen admitted he was using the practice as a chance to experiment with throws he wouldn’t normally risk in the regular season. His first pick came on a tight-window shot to Dalton Kincaid that safety Kevin Byard wrestled away. Later, corner Nashon Wright came down with a ball after what looked like some uncalled contact, and former Bill Tremaine Edmunds intercepted Allen in red-zone drills.

“It’s new opportunities to see new looks, and it’s not the same defensive system that we’re going up against each and every practice here in camp,” said Allen. “Sometimes, it is nice to see some fresh faces across from the O-line, and across from our receivers, and utilizing certain matchups, and seeing what guys can do.”

Williams, meanwhile, didn’t give the ball away, but he hardly carved up Buffalo’s defense. The Bills’ revamped defensive line pressured him all afternoon, and if sacks were live, the rookie would’ve been taken down multiple times.

So while Williams “won” the turnover battle, the Bears’ offense as a whole had trouble moving the ball against Buffalo’s starters.

The two teams meet tonight at Soldier Field in their second preseason matchup. Don’t expect Allen to play much (if at all), but Williams will get another shot to show how he stacks up against NFL competition.
