Update:

In a matter of minutes, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows.

In the dying seconds of Sunday’s Divisional Round game against the LA Rams, Williams threw a game-saving 51-yard touchdown pass to tie the game. It was immediately ranked as one of the greatest postseason plays in NFL history.

Soldier Field was ecstatic, but it wasn’t to last. With the game tied at 17-17 in overtime the Bears had the second possession and a chance to clinch the game. But when Williams targeted DJ Moore to put his team within range of a game-winning field goal, a crucial “miscommunication” ended up costing the Bears.

What did Caleb Williams say about the interception?

Williams had found Moore with unerring regularity throughout Sunday’s game. Moore had a team-high five receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown, making him an obvious target for the crucial play.

But Williams’ pass was intercepted by a diving Kam Curl, who kept hold of the ball and allowed Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford to return to the field to lead the game-winning drive.

Speaking after the game, Williams revealed that there had been a breakdown in communication between passer and receiver.

“I got to go back and watch it, haven’t seen it and don’t really know, but in the moment, I saw the front-side safety down, front-sided concept,” Williams explained.

“Ended up getting hemmed up a little bit and so moved on and had DJ going over top over all of it. Just a miscommunication between him and I. Tried to flatten him off under the safety and he kept it vertical, from what I saw in the moment.”

The Rams took the ball up-field and quickly got into field goal range, allowing Harrison Mevis to kick the game-winning score. The Rams progress to the NFC Championship Game, where they will take on the Seattle Seahawks.
