Philadelphia Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman recently spoke about the challenges of preparing for the future without long-time veterans such as center Jason Kelce and defensive end Brandon Graham.

Roseman is facing the difficult task of balancing the team’s competitiveness in the present while also planning for the future. He expressed the difficulties of finding replacements for these iconic players who have been a significant part of Philadelphia’s team.

What was the thinking behind signing Jurgens for the Eagles?

Roseman initiated the discussion by explaining when did they started exploring options for replacing Kelce, who is widely considered one of the best centers in the NFL. He mentioned that the whole center-substitute process began during the 2022 NFL Draft when the Eagles selected Cam Jurgens.

Even though Kelce had indicated that he was returning at the time, Roseman was already planning for the future. “I informed Jason that we were going to select a center early in the draft,” Roseman recalled. He explained that he believed it would be precious for a young player like Jurgens to learn directly from Kelce. “Having someone in the building who can observe Jason’s skills, rather than just hearing about them, will hopefully help that person have a 10-year career.

While Jurgens didn’t see much playing time in his rookie season, he gained valuable experience at guard, learning firsthand from Kelce about the standard of excellence required to succeed at the position. Roseman is confident that the mentorship Jurgens received will pay dividends, and his valuable rookie contract confirms his confidence in the head coach and the franchise.

The Philadelphia Eagles offered Cam Jurgens a four-year, $6.86 million rookie contract in 2022. The contract includes a $2.2 million signing bonus, $3.92 million in guaranteed money, and an average annual salary of $1.71 million, as reported by Spotrac.

As for Kelce, he’s still a key figure in Philadelphia, even if he’s enjoying some time away, as Roseman joked about him being in Paris for the Olympics. Roseman also touched on Kelce’s potential future in football beyond playing, stating, “Jason could come around whenever he wants. He’d be a great coach or even an evaluator. I’ve tried to recruit him for that, too.
