Cam Newton clears the air about viral video of fight. What did he say?

After video of an altercation involving the former NFL quarterback went viral, he’s finally broken the silence about what exactly happened that day.

After video of an altercation involving the former NFL quarterback went viral, he's finally broken the silence about what exactly happened that day.

One has to admit that seeing a video of Cam Newton - hat and all - tussling with a group of men at a youth football event last weekend was both disturbing and funny at the same time. Regardless, it appears that the man himself has managed to see the lighter side of things, such that he’s now asking young athletes to learn a lesson.

Cam Newton addresses viral video of a fight

You may have caught our previous report about former Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots quarterback, Cam Newton, who appeared in multiple videos that seemed to show an altercation during a 7v7 All-Star football tournament at the B.E.S.T. Academy on Northwest Drive NW in Atlanta. Indeed, Newton immediately became the subject of a number of memes and articles within the first few hours of the videos going public. Now, the former league MVP (2015) has cleared the air on exactly what happened last weekend.

Speaking on his podcast “4th & 1,” Newton said that the incident kicked off after a verbal exchange with the opposing team TopShelf Performance (TSP). He also explained that two leaders of the team previously worked for his 7-on-7 program, C1N. Fans will of course recall the comical way in which Newton’s sizeable fedora stayed in place while he appeared to handle the threat of three men simultaneously without issue, even forcing two of them to the ground while the altercation continued. It was impressive, to say the least. “There was a lot of talking on both sides. On all sides, and let’s just put it like that,” Newton said. He declined to place blame on anyone or offer specifics. “It’s something that starts with words and should’ve ended with words,” he said.

There was nothing to be proud of and Cam Newton admits that

It’s worth noting that Newton - from what we can see in the video - did not start the fight in which he was involved. That said, the 34-year-old admitted that he was not proud of what happened that day. “I’m disappointed in myself for letting it escalate to what it did and that’s what I’m apologetic to,” Newton said, while dismissing public comments from the other men involved. “The truth of the matter is this. Me, being in my position, I should’ve never put myself in that position. That’s just the truth. That s*** could’ve got ugly, for real.”

Regarding who was on the other side of the brawl, USA Today identified the TSP coaches as Steph Brown and TJ Brown. Incidentally, the outlet also reported that Newton screamed insults about the team’s plays. “It’s tough to be my son, I know!” he allegedly shouted. “I raised you!” Of course, one has to imagine that the fact that Newton’s under-15 7v7 team won the tournament didn’t help matters at all. Yet, if one thing was clear, it’s that Newton fully accepted that regardless of who was responsible, the fight shouldn’t have happened.

Indeed, he even acknowledged that the dangers in such a situation were very real i.e., he could have been seriously injured, shot or even killed such that his eight children would have been without a father. He also spoke of the idea that he could have been sued or arrested had he gone further. “This is what I really want the narrative to be,” Newton said. “To every high school player, to every single person I’ve influenced and to every single athlete, use my situation as a way to understand that in one moment and one decision, your life can change just like that. I let my emotions get the best of me and it should not have been called for. It’s simple.”
