Update:

The New York Giants will be without rookie running back Cam Skattebo for the remainder of the season, ESPN reports.

The young star has made a big impact with the Giants this season, forming an impressive partnership with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. Skattebo recorded his seventh touchdown of the season in Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles but suffered a serious leg break later in the game.

Skattebo suffered an open tibia fracture and ruptured deltoid ligament, requiring him to undergo emergency surgery on Sunday evening. He is also thought to have dislocated his right ankle.

An ‘open fracture’ implies that the broken bone penetrated the skin, bringing the risk of infection into play. However the surgery is thought to have gone well and his recovery will be monitored closely.

Speaking earlier this week, Giants head coach Brian Daboll gave an update on Skattebo’s progress: “I’m not going to get into the particulars but all went well. He’s recovering, and obviously he’ll be missed but he’s on the road to recovery... He’s got a road ahead of him.”

The loss of Skattebo will be a major blow to the Giants, coming just as he and Dart were starting to reignite faith in the team. Both were central in a shock victory over the Philadelphia Eagles three weeks ago. The Giants are currently bottom of the NFC East with a 2-6 record but the form of the Dart-Skattebo duo was hoped to be the start of a new era at MetLife Stadium.
