Cam Ward’s stuns with his reaction to scuffle Titans teammate
The Tennessee Titans got the top pick in the NFL Draft after a miserable season, and took quarterback Cam Ward who has already been named the starter.
The Tennessee Titans rookie QB Cam Ward was involve in a little scuffle on Monday’s practice and on Wednesday the first year gunslinger had to face the media, but he was quick to brush on any sort of locker room rift.
Ward not backing down from Simmons
The incident occurred late in practice on Monday after Ward threw a touchdown to Calvin Ridley. The No. 1 overall pick went to celebrate with his wide receiver but on the way he went to talk a little trash to defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons. Simmons gave Ward a two handed shove to the facemask before the offensive line came crashing in to defend their signal caller.
Ward apparently held his own, and said that this is going to be good for a team that spent last year at the bottom of the NFL barrel. Tennessee is in need of a turnaround as a franchise and Simmons knows Ward is going to be the face of that makeover. Ward has accepted the role, and knows these sort of inter squad fights can help a team if handled in the right way.
Talking to reporters after practice Ward said, “Jeff’s strong as s—t.” Then he went on two acknowledged that it was needed. “It was fun at the same time, and I think it was what we needed though. I mean, we love competing, just with me and Jeff, and I’m excited to have that man as my teammate. So I can’t wait to see what he do. Sundays, I already know what he about, but I get to see the real thing coming soon.”
From fishing buddies to fighting
Something to take into account is the relationship between the rookie and the veteran. They may play on opposite sides of the ball, but the two were fishing just a couple weeks ago.
While off the field they may be buddies, Simmons let Ward know how it’s going to be since day one. According to ESPN’s Turron Davenport, Simmons told Ward he wasn’t going to give the rookie anything easy just because he’s supposed to be the face of the franchise. “I get here, and he’s damn near the first one I’m ready to talk s--t to,” Ward said, per Davenport. “He’s the first one that come at my head every day at practice.”
The Titans are trying to turn things around quickly with a rookie QB at the head of the offense, much like the Washington Commanders did last year with Jayden Daniels and the Houston Texans did with C.J. Stroud last year. Simmons knows competing is the only way to do this, and sometimes you have to cross the limit. “It’s training camp and tempers flare,” Simmons said, per Davenport. “I respect the hell out of our offense for having the quarterback’s back. At the end of the day, we’re family and moved on from it.”
