Update:

The Kansas City Chiefs appear keen to re-sign Carson Wentz for the 2025 season, but it remains unclear whether the quarterback will return to Arrowhead Stadium after a year as backup to No. 1 signal caller Patrick Mahomes.

Reid aims to keep “heck of a player” Wentz

Wentz made just the one start for the Chiefs in the 2024 season, replacing Mahomes at QB for the Week 18 defeat to the Denver Broncos - a game that Kansas City went into having already secured the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed.

Andy Reid has made it clear that he’d like Wentz to spend another season in Missouri, but the Chiefs head coach appears to believe that the 32-year-old’s abilities may make it difficult for the franchise to hold on to him.

I’m one of his biggest fans,” Reid said in late December, per Sports Illustrated, adding that Wentz deserves to be more than a backup QB.

Selfishly, I’d like to keep him, but I don’t think that’s going to be possible,” the three-time Super Bowl-winning head coach said. “He should be starting in the league somewhere, that’s what he should be doing. By his ability and the way he goes about his business, he’s so structured and disciplined in his study habits and working out, all those things are just top-notch.”

Reid had already lavished praise on Wentz earlier in December, referring to the North Carolinian as a “heck of player” when he told reporters: “He’s started in the league and been successful. He’s got a great feel for this offense, very smart, big arm. I like the way he carries himself - I like everything about him.”

What has Wentz said about his future?

Wentz, who signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs last April, has been tipped to join the New York Giants as a free agent.

Since Kansas City’s Super Bowl LIX defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this month, the former North Dakota star has taken to social media with end-of-year thank-you messages that have offered no clear indication about his plans for the future.

In one post on Instagram, published the day after the Chiefs’ 40-22 loss to the Eagles, Wentz shared photos of himself alongside Kansas City colleagues Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, a player who may be about to retire.

Got to work with some of the best in the world this year and grateful for the opportunity to be a part of greatness day in and day out,” Wentz said. “Came up short at the end but the memories and relationships can never be taken for granted!”

Last week, the quarterback then said on Instagram: “Grateful for another incredible year playing the game I love. Can’t wait to see what God has in store for year 10!

Since joining the NFL as the 2016 Draft’s second overall pick, Wentz has also played for the Eagles, the Indianapolis Colts, the Washington Commanders and the Los Angeles Rams.
