Update:

The Los Angeles Chargers need some help at the wide receiver position as they prepare to head into the 2025 NFL season. But if predictions are correct, that help may not come from second-year Brenden Rice.

Big-name legacy on the roster bubble in LA

Son of NFL legend Jerry Rice, Brenden was selected by the Chargers in the seventh round of the NFL Draft last year. But the Chargers are predicted to keep just six receivers on the final roster for 2025 and they’re putting a lot of hope into emerging rookies Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith.

Not only that, but Rice didn’t have the season the Chargers would have hoped for. He played in just three games, and failed to record any stats in his limited action.

Although he was a late-round pick, Rice is the son of one of the best players in NFL history. His size (6′3″, 210 pounds) and a strong college finish at USC gave the Chargers hope that he could make an impact, but despite making the 53-man roster last year, they were let down.

Now, Rice finds himself on the outside looking in as the Chargers are predicted to cut ties with him after just one season. His NFL future remains uncertain, and it’s a far cry from the Hall of Fame path of his father.
