Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigns due to ‘personal reasons.’ What do we know?
While his decision will surely come as a blow to the franchise, it goes without saying that the reasons behind it are worthy of empathy, and understanding.
There are in fact things that are more important than a career in professional sports such as health, happiness, and of course family. The Bears DC has chosen to focus on the things that matter most.

There was sad news on Wednesday when reports confirmed that Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigned after just two weeks worth of his second season with the team.
“It is with great regret that I tender my resignation as the defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears Football Club, effective immediately,” Williams said in a statement. “I am taking a step back to take care of my health and my family. I value the NFL shield and all that it stands for and after taking some time to address my health, I plan to come back and coach again.” Having entered the NFL in 2001, Williams has spent just over two decades in the league in a career that has seen him work with the Buccaneers, Colts, Vikings, Lions, and ultimately the Bears who hired him in February 2022.
So, what do we know about Alan Williams’ situation?
Not much to be honest, however, it’s worth noting that the 53-year-old was not present with the team last week after citing personal reasons. To that end, head coach Matt Eberflus was the defensive playcaller during the Bears’ clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It is expected that he will continue to do so for the time being. As for the Bears, they currently sit on a 0-2 record after a Week 1 38-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers and a 27-17 Week 2 defeat courtesy of the aforementioned Bucs. Worse still is the fact that Chicago’s defense has conceded the second most yards per pass attempt in the league (9.1) behind only the Los Angeles Chargers.
In total, they have allowed 554 yards, one of the highest among defenses, and have zero interceptions. There is also the issue of sacks, or rather lack thereof as they currently sit dead last in the league with just one. This is all to say that Williams’ departure though completely understandable, arrives at a terrible time. Next up for the Bears? The reigning Super Bowl champion, Kansas City Chiefs.
