Chicago Bears 33 vs. 14 New England Patriots summary: stats and highlights | Week 7
The Chicago Bears used a second half surge to defeat Bailey Zappe and the streaking New England Patriots to put and end to their three game losing streak on Monday Night Football. Justin Fields had 281 yards of total offense and two touchdowns in the 33-14 victory from Gillette Stadium.
Bears use 10 days wisely
All the talk coming into the Week 7 finale was the Patriots offense over the last two games. No one was talking about how the slumping Bears had a 10 day mini bye to prepare for Monday night.
Chicago played Washington last Thursday which gave the Bears time to prepare for Mac Jones, Billy Zappe, or whoever was going to be under center for the Patriots.
Bill Belichick started Mac Jones after he was cleared to play following an ankle injury suffered in Week 4. Jones knew the Pats had won the last two games in blowouts and no doubt felt the pressure coming back to play in front of the home fans.
Jones benched after three possessions
It took just three possessions in which the Pats had two three and outs and Jones threw a back foot lob that was picked before Bill Belichick, who was looking for win number 325, pulled his second year QB for the one-time third stringer Zappe in the second quarter.
In that time the Bears built up a 10-0 point lead as Justin Fields had the Chicago offense flying down the field. His three yard run would make it a two score game at the end of the first quarter and the Pats looked lost until Bailey Zappe came in.
After the Jones interception Zappe was called upon to try to bring New England back, and after just five minutes gave the Pats the 14-10 lead with two quick strike drives deep in the second quarter. Zappe found Jakobi Meyers on a 30 yard bomb to put the home side on the board. Following an interception, Rhamondre Stevenson scored a four yard touchdown to give New England the momentary lead.
Bears defense cause four TOs
The Bears punched back in a hurry scoring a touchdown just after the Two Minute Warning on a 25 yard screen pass to Khalil Herbert. Bailey Zappe would fumble on the next possession, which would turnout to be the beginning of the Pats downfall on offense, and set up the Bears for a field goal as the first half expired to stretch the lead to 20-14.
Zappe and the offense turned off after the break, going three and out on their opening two drives while the Chris Santos extended the Bears advantage to 26-14 with two of his four field goals on the night. David Montgomery would blow out the candles on the Zappe party with a 1 yard TD run to put the game out of reach for the Pats.
Justin Fields might have had his best day as a pro, going for 179 yards in the air with a touchdown and an interception, while adding 82 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown.
Decison time for Belichick.
Billy Zappe would throw two late interceptions trying to claw his team back into the game. The rookie ended the night with 185 yards a touchdown and two interceptions. Bill Belichick comes out of this game with more questions then answers at the quarterback position and will have to do some thinking about who he wants at quarterback when the Patriots take on the red hot New York Jets next week.
