Update:

Good news may soon be on the way for the Kansas City Chiefs, particularly rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who suffered a shoulder injury in the first quarter of Kansas City’s Week 1 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo, Brazil.

The injury occurred on a crossing route when Worthy collided with tight end Travis Kelce in the middle of the field. As Worthy fell, his left arm was trapped awkwardly beneath his body. Kansas City was forced to punt on the next play after going three-and-out.

Chiefs relief on Worthy injury

Worthy left the field and headed straight to the locker room, forcing the Chiefs to shuffle their offense after just a handful of snaps.

There were initial fears that the 22-year-old may have suffered a significant tear or fracture, which could have required season-ending surgery. However, Chiefs coach Andy Reid has not ruled Worthy out of Kansas City’s Super Bowl LIX rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, September 14.

Coach Reid offers cautious optimism on Xavier Worthy

“I’d probably tell you that’s slim,” Reid said when asked about the likelihood of the wide receiver suiting up this weekend. “But there’s still a chance. He’s doing well. All the stuff’s positive.”

While Worthy may not ultimately play against the Eagles, attention will then turn to a potential return in Week 3 against the New York Giants. Reid’s update has eased fears of a long-term absence.
