Chiefs 21 vs 27 Chargers summary, stats, scores and highlights | NFL Week 1

Herbert ended he night with 318 yards and 3 TD passes on 25/34 throwing but this was the play of the night. He took off on a 3rd and long and instead of giving the ball back to the Chiefs with time to spare, he scrambled for the 19 yard first down run and ended the game. 

With Herbert playing like, this and the defense playing as they have been for the last season and change, this Chargers team is legit. The Chiefs have to go back to the drawing board with two WRs that could be out next week for their Super Bowl rematch against the Eagles. 

We have become so used to seeing the Chiefs squeak these tight games out over the last few years, but on Friday night in Sao Paulo it was Justin Herbert and the Chargers making all the plays that made a difference. This pass to Johnston was the second TD connection of the night for those two and ended up being the difference in Brazil. 

Travis Kelce was kept quiet for most of the night, but when they needed him most the TE came up with a big play to bring the Chiefs back into the ball game. He had 2 catches for 47 yards, most of them on this big play at the start of the 4th quarter. 

Mahomes would end the night with 258 yards and 1 TD on 24/39 passing, but it wasn't enough as the Chargers continued to pour it on until the final whistle. 

What's a primetime Chiefs game without a little Mahomes Magic? This third down conversion that he made basically from his knees kept the drive alive and led to a big play just a few snaps later. 

Keenan Allen has spent most of his career with the Chargers and now he is back and Justin Herbert didn't take too long to reconnect with his old teammate. Every time the Chiefs looked like they were going to take control of the game, Herbert came up with a big drive to shut KC down and turn the tides in favor of LA. 

Mahomes and the Chiefs looked to take control in the 2nd half. The defense held LA to a three and out and Mahomes opened the third quarter with a TD scramble that should have tied the game but Butker missed the PAT after this play. 

With no timeouts the Chiefs had to rush the FG unit on and Harrison Butker drilled a 59 yard field goal, but his missed PAT in the second half would define the game as the Chargers were able to take advantage of that mistake later in the game. 

The Chiefs had very little working for them in the first half of the game. Xavier Worthy went down with an injury on the opening drive and without Rashee Rice who is suspended, the Chiefs were left short handed at the WR position. 

A mistake by Chargers rookie RB Omarion Hampton stopped the clock late in the 2nd quarter, and that allowed the Chiefs a chance to put points on the board late. Mahomes connected to Throton on this deep ball to set up a late field goal. 

The Los Angeles Chargers made a big statement to start this season in Sao Paulo. They beat the Kansas City Chiefs to not only start the new campaign on the right foot, but took an early lead in a division that looks like it will be tight all year long. 

The Chargers defense came out and forced KC into a three and out on the opening drive and Justin Herbert marched LA down the field before connecting with Quentin Johnston with the opening TD of the night.

The Chargers take the Week 1 win in Sao Paulo and get a big division win over the Chiefs who have dominated the AFC West.

There was a time in this game that the Chiefs looked like they took control, but everything it felt like that, Herbert came up with a big drive to swing the momentum. Herbert finished the drive with his second TD connection to Johnston.

The Chiefs best play of the first half was the final play of the first half. Butker and the FG unit rushed on to the field and hit this 59 yard field goal to end the half. 

Mahomes and the offense were kept quiet for most of the first half, but a mistake by the Chargers rookie running back Hampton stopped the clock and gave the Chiefs time for one last chance to put points on the board. Mahomes hit Thorton with a deep ball, one of his only big plays of the game. He's 12/21 for 98 yards in two quarters. 

After holding the Chiefs to a three and out to start the game, Herbert drove LA down the field and led his team into the end zone with this 3rd down pass to Johnston! He looked great in his first couple of drives, but has slowed down since. Herbert is 12/18 for 171 yards and this TD.

Mahomes in season openers 

The first step in starting a Super Bowl season is winning your Week 1 game. It’s always better to get out ahead of the eight ball and win the opener to set the tone for the rest of the season. The Chiefs have had Patrick Mahomes as their starting QB for the last 7 Week 1’s and KC have won six of those seven games. The only loss came in 2023 when the Chiefs played the Lions. Last year they just edged out the Baltimore Ravens thanks to Isiah Likely’s toe which landed out of the back of the end zone to give the Chiefs an opening weekend win. That would catapult them to win 15 of their next 17 games. In seven games Mahomes has 2,059 yards, 21 TDs and two INTs. He and the Chiefs know what its like being in the spotlight and they know what it’s like to start the season with a primetime, spotlight game. 

Is the end coming for KC?

There are a lot of people chirping about the potential end of a dynasty. It doesn’t seem like a lot of that chatter is coming out of Kansas City, but ever since the Chiefs loss to the Eagles in the Super Bowl there have been plenty of people jumping ship from the KC bandwagon. The offense looked a shade of itself, as the defense carried the load. Travis Kelce isn’t quite as dominant of a force as he was before. Andy Reid is getting closer to retirement each and every year. Despite that, the Chiefs keep winning, keep getting to the Super Bowl and continue to be the dynasty of this generation. 

Last night’s game 

The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles hosted division rivals, the Dallas Cowboys last night from the City of Brotherly Love. It started with a bang, or rather a splash as Jalen Carter was kicked out of the game before a snap was even taken. He was spotted spitting on Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, and six seconds into the game he was sent his marching orders. Dallas drove down the field and scored on their first possession The Eagles answered back with the first of Jalen Hurts’ two TD scrambles. It was 14-14 after each team scored TDs in their first two possessions. After two quarters Philly led 21-20 thanks to Saquon Barkley’s first TD run of the season late in the 2nd quarter. Philly kicked a field goal to start the second half, but then the defense dictated the rest of the way. The turning point of the game was a red zone fumble that Philly forced in the third quarter. From then on the Cowboys barley crossed the 50 yard line and Philly hung on to win the opener.

Rice suspended 

Rashee Rice exploded on to the scene in the second half of his rookie season. He had 79 catches for nearly 1,000 yards, but an knee injury suffered as a result of some friendly fire caused him to miss the rest of the season Patrick Mahomes was chasing down an interception and happened to land on Rice’s leg, tearing his knee up and forcing him to the sidelined for the rest of the year. This season, he is going to have to miss the first six games of the season after a multi car crash Rice was involved in led to a violation of league policy. The Chiefs will be out one of their most dynamic receivers until he can return on October 13th against the Detroit Lions. 

AFC WEST preview 

The AFC West is no joke. Don’t let the fact that the Chiefs have won the last nine division titles trick you into thinking that this is going to be a breeze for KC this year. The Broncos and the Chargers made the playoffs last year. Denver had a rookie QB with a fantastic defense and finally it looks like Sean Payton has his man under center. The Chargers made the playoffs in the first year of the Harbaugh era, and you can only imagine they are going to be better this year. The Raiders brought in Super Bowl winning coach Pete Carroll and reunited him with his old QB in Seattle, Geno Smith. This is shaping up to be one of the toughest divisions in the league, and the Chiefs are not going to have an easy time making it a 10th straight division title. 

Chargers star watch 

It’s all about the QBs tonight. Justin Herbert is in year two of the Project Harbaugh. Herbert was dubbed as the next big thing coming out of the University of Oregon. The Golden Boy with a golden spiral was supposed to bring the Chargers back to relevancy in the AFC. Since Herbert was drafted by the LA in 2020 the Chargers have not won a playoff game. Herbert has struggled with injuries and coaching changes, but Harbaugh is looking to come in a give Herbert some much needed consistency on the field and on the sidelines. Last year his numbers weren’t astonishing, but he took care of the ball, throwing just 3 INTs, while passing for 23 TDs. If he can take care of the ball, while moving the offense like we all think he’s capable of doing, and with the defense they have, the Chargers could be one of the best teams in the division, conference and in the entire league. 

Chiefs star watch

There are some great quarterbacks in the NFL right now. Lamar Jackson is a two time MVP. Josh Allen is a reigning MVP on a team that has constantly challenged the Chiefs throughout their dynasty. But make no mistake. Patrick Mahomes is the best QB in the league, and this season he will be looking remind everyone of that fact after a couple of subpar statistical seasons. He has a career low 3,928 yards passing, 26 TDs which is tied for lowest in his career, and threw 11 interceptions. Despite that, the Chiefs lost just two games during the regular season and a lot of those close games were decided by Mahomes’ magic. 

Chargers last year 

The headline of the Chargers last year’s season was the new boss of the sidelines. Jim Harbaugh returned to the NFL after winning a National Championship with the University of Michigan. The former Niners coach, and noted QB coaching genius went to LA and took Justin Herbert under his wing. It was a bumpy start for Harbaugh and Herbert who went 3-3, but the defense was the star of the show as the offense were still working out the kinks of a new offense. The defense held their opponents to under 20 points in the first 9 games and the Chargers went 6-3. They ended the season 11-6 getting one of the last spots in the playoffs in the AFC. LA had to go to Houston to take on the Texans in the first round of the playoffs but the offensive struggles popped up at the worst time. Four turnovers and some red zone troubles allowed the Texans to stretch out to a comfortable lead and cruise to the Divisional Round. 

Chiefs last year 

The Chiefs were searching for their place in NFL history with a chance to complete the first three peat ever. They went into the season with a lot of question marks especially surrounding the offense that has been the engine of this team for the last decade. The offense struggled at times. Patrick Mahomes had moments in which his frustration boiled over for the first time in his career. But the defense carried the team and the Chiefs kept on winning. It wasn’t always pretty and they weren’t always blowouts, but they kept on winning. They rattled off their first nine wins before losing to Buffalo in Buffalo. That would be their only loss of the season until Week 18 when they rested their starters because they had the 1 seed in the AFC locked up. They squeezed by the Texans, and went down to the wire with the Bills in the AFC Championship. That set up a Super Bowl showdown with the Eagles, and they got wiped out by Philadelphia. The loss on Super Sunday led a lot of people to question if this was the end of the dynasty?

Hello everyone and Boa Noite from Brazil where the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to keep their dynasty alive after a suffering a Super Bowl stomping at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles. There is talk of the dynasty coming to an end but Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid have other ideas. The Los Angeles Chargers are one of those teams that are looking to challenge the Chiefs not just in the division, but in the conference.
