Colts 20 vs 23 Chiefs summary, score, stats and highlights | NFL Week 12

KC WIN THE GAME WITH A BUTKER FIELD GOAL!!! HIS FIFTH OF THE DAY AND KC'S SEASON STAYS ALIVE AS THEY IMPROVE TO 6-5 ON THE YEAR. 

The Chiefs got the ball from their own 3 yard line, and drove down the field setting up a game tying field goals. Mahomes had 352 yards on 29/46 but KC hurt themselves by settling for field goals. 

After 50 minutes, the Chiefs get into the end zone for the first time thanks to Kareem Hunt's TD which was the only TD of the Chiefs day. Hunt had 104 yards and a TD to rekindled the hope for KC's day and season. 

The Colts were driving into the red zone, but Kareem Hunt fumbled and the ball, and it looked like the Chiefs were done, but they came roaring back. 

The Colts added to their lead with a Jones TD pass to Drew Ogeltree in the back of the end zone for his second TD of the day. Jones didn't have much success the rest of the day. He ended the game with 19/31 for 181 yards and 2 TDs. 

After the interception, it was Daniel Jones finding Michale Pittman for the game's first score. The Colts looked like they were up to the challenge coming out of the gate, and looked like for most of the day. 

The Kansas City Chiefs had a must win game against against one of the best teams in the league, and got the win but needed overtime to top the Indianapolis Colts. Patrick Mahomes had 352 yards, but no TDs in the 23-20 win. 

The Colts got the ball first and were held to a three and out but on Patrick Mahomes first throw he was picked off. Mahomes and the offense struggled to get TDs in the first half. They had 3 drives of 10+ plays, but settled for FGs.

Indy’s resume so far

I don’t want to take anything away from what the Colts have done, because their turnaround has been incredible, but when you look at their schedule and see the teams they played, you see only four of those games have been against teams with a winning record. In those four games the Colts are 2-2, having lost to the Rams and Steelers while beating the Broncos in Week 2 and the Chargers in LA a month ago. Today they will be taking on a 5-5 team, but they aren’t just any .500 team. This is the Chiefs, in Arrowhead. Hold on tight. 

Chiefs tight losses

The Chiefs may not be the Chiefs of the last few years where they were sweeping through the league on their way to the top seed in the AFC and home field advantage in the playoffs. They have five losses, but all of them have come in one score games. That means they are staying in games and being competitive against teams like the Broncos and Bills and Eagles, but it also means that they aren’t a sure shot to win those games like we have seen in recent years. Patrick Mahomes used to be the most dependable late game player in the NFL, but this year things don’t seem to be going his way. 

AFC Standings 

Coming into Week 12 we see the Colts at the top of the AFC South, and hanging with the Colts and the Pats as the only teams with just two losses. They beat the Broncos early in the season which gives them the tie break over Denver, and are currently even with Pats although New England has yet to get a BYE so they have won more win coming into the weekend. The Chiefs are currently third in the AFC West at 5-5 and if the season were to end today, they would not be in the playoff picture. Almost every game from here until the finish line is going to be a must win game if the Chiefs are going to keep pace with the rest of the league. 

JT chasing history 

It’s been a while since we have seen a running back win MVP, but for the second straight year we have a candidate making a push to win the award. Last year it was Saquon Barkley, and this year it’s Jonathan Taylor. JT has rushed for a league leading 1,139 yards and has 15 TDs on the ground and another 2 receiving TDs on the season and is coming off a career high game in which he rushed for 244 yards and three TDs which puts him in range of LaDanian Tomlinson’s all time record of 31 total TDs in a season. There are 7 games to go in the season, so he would have to average 2 TDs a game to tie LT, but you wouldn’t put it past the Colts running back who has had five multi TD games including five 3 TD games. 

Star watch: Chiefs 

The three time MVP of the NFL has gone through a few different phases this season, and in that time the Chiefs offense looked really good and in other times really average. Mahomes started the season without his top weapons and KC suffered. Then he got Xavier Worthy back and then Rashee Rice and everything seemed sorted. He threw 14 TDs in five games, and KC won four of those games, but he has just 1 TD and 2 INTs in the last two games that have resulted in losses for the Chiefs. Mahomes knows dropping below .500 this late in the season would put KC’s playoff chances at serious risk. He’s got to be at an MVP level to beat this talented Colts team.

What a turn around it has been for the Colts, and especially Daniel Jones. Indy took a chance on him this offseason, and his starting status wasn’t certain in the preseason but he won the starting job, and since then has won the hearts of Colts fans over the first 11 games of the season. After years of disappointment in New York he is on the verge of a career season with 2,659 yards and 15 TDs, which was his career high that came back in 2022. He is winning big games, and putting up big numbers. If he can control his mistakes, the Colts win. When he throws multiple interceptions, the Colts have lost both games. This is a big pressure game in a tough atmosphere and Jones is going to have to be at his best to show that he is ready to handle the spotlight that comes with a team at the top of the conference. 

Chiefs last game 

Kansas City comes into this week on a two game losing streak after losses to Buffalo and then Denver last Sunday. It was an AFC West battle, and the Broncos took a huge step in their quest to win the division. It was a tight, defense first game that went to halftime tied at 6-6 after each team kicked a couple of field goals in the first 30 minutes of the game. Jaleel McLaughlin put the first TD on the board with a 4 yard touchdown rush in the 3rd quarter which was countered with a Kareem Hunt TD run just a few minutes later. KC would get into the end zone one more time in the 4th quarter, but three more DEN FGs including a 35 yarder as time expired would be enough to down the Chiefs as the Broncos won their 8th straight game.

There were more than a few people who were weary of the Colts, and how they would respond following their loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers a few weeks ago, but Indy went to Berlin and took on a Falcons team that gave them plenty of problems. The game went to OT but the Colts needed a late 4th quarter field goal to force the extra session and in overtime it was Jonathan Taylor who closed the game out to cap his 244 yard, three TD day from Germany. He ran in an 8 yard TD to seal the game and send the Colts into their BYE week at 8-2 and tied at the top of the AFC coming into today’s matchup against the Chiefs.
