Dolphins defeat Commanders in OT at the Bernabéu
Dolphins outlast Commanders 16–13 in overtime thriller in NFL’s historic first game in Spain
Under the retractable roof of the iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the NFL’s first-ever regular-season game in Spain delivered drama, defense, and a walk-off finish as the Miami Dolphins edged the Washington Commanders 16–13 in overtime.
The league’s debut on Spanish soil drew a loud, soccer-style atmosphere, complete with chants echoing through Real Madrid’s world-famous venue. And the game itself felt just as tense, with neither team leading by more than a touchdown at any point.
A defensive grind
Both teams leaned heavily on the run, and Miami’s ground attack ultimately proved the difference. De’Von Achane powered the Dolphins with 120 yards on 21 carries (5.7 YPC), while rookie Ollie Gordon II added 45 yards and Miami’s lone touchdown, a physical 20-yard burst that tied the game in the fourth quarter.
Washington countered with one of its strongest rushing performances of the year, led by Chris Rodriguez Jr. (79 yards) and quarterback Marcus Mariota, who ripped off a 44-yard scramble en route to 49 rushing yards of his own. In total, the Commanders piled up 172 rushing yards, their second-highest mark of the season.
But Miami’s defense struggled when it mattered most. Cornerback Jack Jones made the defensive play of the game with an interception in the fourth quarter, helping limit Washington to just zero points over the final 24 minutes of regulation and overtime.
Tua efficient, Mariota scrappy
Neither quarterback lit up the stat sheet, but both were steady in the environment of constant pressure.
Tua Tagovailoa: 14-of-20, 171 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT
Marcus Mariota: 20-of-30, 213 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Jaylen Waddle led Miami with 52 receiving yards, including a 31-yard strike that helped set up an early field goal. Washington’s Deebo Samuel was the game’s most productive pass-catcher, tallying 74 yards and the Commanders’ only touchdown.
Special teams decides the game
In a tight game with long drives and possessions, special teams became the deciding factor.
Miami kicker Riley Patterson went a perfect 3-for-3, including the 46-yard game-winner in overtime that sent the Madrid crowd into a roar. Washington’s Matt Gay, meanwhile, went 2-for-4, leaving six points on the field that proved costly.
Overtime in the Bernabéu
After Mariota threw an interception in the Commanders' first possession of overtime, the Dolphins leaned on Achane and Gordon to move into scoring territory. A precise Tagovailoa throw to Malik Washington put Miami comfortably in field-goal range, and Patterson sealed the historic win with confidence.
As the Dolphins improved to 4–7, the Commanders fell to 3–8, but both teams walked off the field having contributed to a moment that will live in NFL international history. Spain wanted a show, and the Dolphins and Commanders delivered one worthy of the Bernabéu.
What's next?
