Commanders’ Jamin Davis could face jail time for reckless driving. What do we know?
The 24-year-old linebacker could well be facing significant consequences, now that a plea deal in his 2022 reckless driving case has been denied by a judge.
The Washington Commanders have seen their fair share of controversies over the last few months. From former owner Daniel Snyder’s creation and maintenance of a toxic workplace environment to the resulting official investigations that led to pressure on him to sell the franchise. Indeed, the Commanders have only recently changed hands with American billionaire, Josh Harris, at the head of a group that now owns the team. Yet, they can now add the possible incarceration of one of their players to the list.
Jamin Davis could face jail time for reckless driving
According to reports, the Washington Commanders’ 2021 first-round pick, Jamin Davis, could well be in serious trouble in relation to a citation he received on March 28th, 2022. It is understood that at the time Davis was allegedly driving his McLaren at a speed of 114 mph in a 45 mph zone in Loudoun County, Virginia, in the middle of the day. As per reports, Davis’ charge is a Class 1 misdemeanor in Virginia, punishable with up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. A judge sentenced Davis to 30 days in jail and a fine as well as having his license suspended.
Though Davis attempted to agree on Monday to a plea deal with the prosecution’s office for a maximum of eight days of active incarceration, the move was denied by Judge Stephen E. Sincavage. Citing the fact that the area in which Davis was driving — Loudoun County Parkway at Evergreen Ridge Drive - has two schools, and is a 15-minute drive from Dulles International Airport, Sincavage also spoke of Davis’ “not terrible but not clean” driving record. For the sake of clarity, Davis was charged with reckless driving in 2021 as well, after he was found to be driving 89 mph in a 65 mph zone. That charge was reduced to an infraction at the time, which resulted in Davis paying a $150 fine. “Going 114 mph makes it impossible to react. It could lead to consequences nobody wants to think about,” Sincavage said. “A sentence where the court is restricted to eight days is not one this judge finds appropriate.” Incidentally, both Davis and his attorney, Jeffrey Mangeno declined to comment on the ruling.
What have the Washington Commanders said?
On Monday, Commanders head coach Ron Rivera addressed the situation, telling the press that the team will support Davis as he goes through the legal process. A team spokesperson later added that they’re aware of the case, remain in close contact with Davis and his representation, and “are not able to comment further at this time.” Davis of course was selected by the Commanders out of Kentucky with the No. 19 overall pick in 2021 NFL Draft. Since entering the NFL he’s registered a total of four sacks and 180 combined tackles in 32 games across two seasons. Davis will have a status hearing this coming Thursday.
