For a second straight week the NFL gifts us a blockbuster match up on Thursday night as the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders meet from Lincoln Financial Field. Philly comes into Week 11 leading the NFC North, but the Commanders sit just a half game behind them and can take control of the division with a win on the road.

Matchup: Commanders vs. Eagles

Washington is in the midst of one of the greatest turnaround seasons we have ever seen. The Commanders completely cleaned house after a 4-13 season last year. Dan Quinn was named head coach, and Jayden Daniels was taken with the second pick in the NFL Draft. Led by their rookie QB who is being mentioned in the MVP conversation, they won four of their first five and seven of their first nine games of the season. While the turn around has been impressive, they are still looking for a win against a team that consider themselves Super Bowl contenders. They beat the Bengals when Cincy was terrible. They beat the Cardinals before we knew that the Cardinals were a decent team. The rest of their wins aren’t particularly jaw dropping. In fact their best performances of the season have come in their last two losses. They hung with the Ravens in Baltimore, and came up just short of beating the Steelers last week after Zach Ertz was stopped inches shy of picking up a 4th down conversion that would have put Washington in a position to kick a game winning field goal against the Steelers.

The Eagles came into this season on the heel of a historic collapse last season. They lost five of their last six to stumble into the playoffs and then were smacked around by Baker Mayfield and the Bucs in the first round of the playoffs. Changes needed to be made, so they brought in a new offensive and defensive coordinator. It wasn’t the smoothest of starts to the season, but once Hurts and the offense got healthy and Saquon Barkley got used to his new surroundings, the Eagles started to roll. They have rattled off five straight wins including their blowout of the Cowboys in Dallas. Hurts is playing like he did back when he led the Eagles to the Super Bowl two years ago. He is shredding teams in the air and on the ground, and Saquon Barkey has brought a balance to this offense that Hurts hasn’t had since he came to the City of Brotherly Love. And on the other side of the ball, Vic Fangio’s defense is shutting teams down. In their five game win streak they have given up more than 20 points just once, and is allowing just 13 points per game in that span.

These ancient, bitter rivals have been going at it since the 1930s, long before the NFL was even around. Back then it was the Boston Redskins and the Philadelphia Eagles. Obviously things have changed including the city and the mascot for the team now residing in the nation’s capital. In the almost 100 year history of the series the Commanders hold the 89-84-5 edge over the Eagles. That hasn’t been the case over the last few years. Philly has won five of the last six matchups against the Commanders including last year’s 38-31 win in which Hurts threw four three TDs on an injured knee that would turn out to be the beginning of the end of the Eagles.

Odds, Over/Under and money line

Primetime games are always tricky, especially when it’s a game between two division opponents. The Eagles come into Thursday night on a five game win streak and are a 3.5 point favorite against the Commanders with the Over/Under set at 48.5.

  • Eagles vs. Commanders spread: Philadelphia -3.5
  • Eagles vs. Commanders over/under: 48.5 points
  • Eagles vs. Commanders money line: Washington +153, Philadelphia -184

Prediction

I don’t know how the Commanders are thinking coming into this game, but for me this seems like a make or break game for Washington. I don’t want to say a 7-3 team’s season is on the line, but if they lose this game, which would be their second straight loss, things might start getting complicated for a team that hasn’t had to deal with a lot of hardships to this point of the season. I think Washington storms into Philly and comes out of Thursday night with their first big win of the season.

Commanders win 24-14.
