Eagles stun Commanders in NFC East showdown to head to Super Bowl LIX

The Philadelphia Eagles ran all over the Washington Commanders in the NFC Conference Championship game, winning 55-23 to send them to Super Bowl LIX. They'll soon find out if they face the Kansas City Chiefs or the Buffalo Bills.

The Eagles run game and the Commanders turnovers all contributed to Philly's win today. Philly had seven rushing touchdowns and the Commanders committed four turnovers that turned into Eagles scores.

Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels' sensational rookie season comes to an end as he finished the game with 29 of 48 completions for 255 yards and one passing touchdown (to WR Terry McLaurin), one interception, and was sacked three times. He added six carries for 48 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The Commanders' only other scores came from kicker Zane Gonzalez, who made all three of his field goal attempts.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts' injured knee didn't seem to affect him much as he finished the game with 20 of 28 completions for 246 yards and one passing touchdown to A.J. Brown, no interceptions, and two sacks. He also added 10 carries for 16 yards and three rushing touchdowns. Running back Saquon Barkley continued his dominance over Washington with 15 carries for 118 yards and three rushing touchdowns, including a 60-yard TD run on the Eagles' opening drive. RB Will Shipley added four carries for 77 yards, including one huge 57-yard run, and his first NFL touchdown on a 4-yard run.

The Philly defense deserves a lot of credit as well. Zack Baun had 10 total tackles, OrenBurks had nine, and ReedBlankenship had seven. Baun, Nolan Smith Jr., and Jordan Davis all contributed a sack. Baun and Blankenship, along with RB Kenneth Gainwell, all recovered fumbles by the Commanders.

The Eagles will go to their fifth Super Bowl on Sunday February 9, and look to win their second.

The Commanders end their best season in decades with a lot to look forward to in the future.

The Eagles will face either the Kansas City Chiefs or Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl LIX.

Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has been the major difference in Washington's season this year, taking them to their first NFC title game in 19 years.

In the regular season, Daniels put up 3,568 passing yards and 25 touchdowns, plus 891 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground. This postseason, he's thrown for 567 yards and four touchdowns. He's already upset two division leaders in the playoffs and today, he'll try to defy the odds again against the NFC East leaders.

Saquon Barkley: The Commanders' biggest problem

Saquon Barkley moved on from the New York Giants this season to play for the enemy. The Eagles running back has definitely made the Giants regret letting him go. He's had a sensational first season in Philly. And he could be the biggest threat to a Commanders Super Bowl appearance.

As he's always played in the NFC East, the Commanders defense is used to facing Barkley. And they have not fared well against him. Against the Commanders, Barkley averages 137.5 scrimmage yards - the second-most of any player against a single opponent.

In the Eagles' Week 11 win against the Commanders, Barkley put up 146 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. In Week 16, he put up 150 yards and two touchdowns. The Commanders defense was 30th against the run in the regular season, allowing an average of 137.5 yards per game. They'll have to do a lot better that against Barkley today.

The Eagles and Commanders' last meetings

As divisional rivals, the Eagles and Commanders met twice in the regular season, and they split their wins.

In their first meeting in Week 11, the Eagles came away with the 26-18 victory. In the second, in Week 17, the Commanders took the 36-33 victory.

Jalen Hurts Injury Update

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts injured his knee during their Divisional Round game against the Rams and said he's "been progressing". Today, he'll wear a knee brace when they face the Commanders, indicating he's not fully healthy, despite being taken off the injury report ahead of the game.

The Philadelphia Eagles ended their season as the leaders of the NFC East, with a 14-3 record, and the No. 2 seed in the NFC. In the Wild Card round of the playoffs. the Eagles hosted the Green Bay Packers and won 22-10. They went on to play the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round and won 28-22.

The Washington Commanders have had their best season in years under new head coach Dan Quinn and with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. They ended the regular season at 12-5, second in the NFC East, and the No. 6 seed in the NFC. They played the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card game and pulled off a 23-20 victory on the road. Their Divisional win was even more impressive as they upset the NFC's top seed Detroit Lions (15-2) at Ford Field, 45-31 to set up their meeting with the Eagles.
