Update:

The NFL has had some form of male cheerleaders since 1998 when the Baltimore Ravens became the first team to introduce male stuntmen on their squad. However, it’s only been since 2018 that a male cheerleader has actually danced with an NFL squad, when the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints broke the mould.

So, it’s still rare to see men on an NFL cheer squad, but it’s becoming more common every year. In 2025, there are 12 teams with male cheerleaders - more than ever before. But of course, no progress is without its controversy.

NFL cheerleading video sparks backlash ahead of Week 1

Some people have argued that cheerleading roles should only go to women, often using homophobic language and personal attacks on the men on the squads.

A recent video went viral which just added fuel to the controversy. The clip, featuring Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders - two male and two female - has stirred debate on social media just days before the NFL season kicks off.

The video was filmed in a bathroom and posted by cheerleader Brianna Putney. It shows the group dancing together for social media. Some fans blasted the video as “unacceptable” and disrespectful, while others dismissed the outrage, pointing out that male cheerleaders have long been part of sports at the high school and college levels.

Despite the fact that nothing inappropriate happened in the video, those against men appearing in what they view as a “women’s” sport are using it the clip as an excuse for outrage.
